Because, when you subract the 2 digits of a 2 digit number from it you always get a number divisible by 9, with an exception of 0. So, everytime you try it again it puts the same symbol for the numbers divisible by 9 including 0. See it mate?

Think about it. Take any 2 digit number starting with a 2 (20, 21, 22...ect). Do that trick it tells you to and you will always get 18. With any 2 digit number starting with 3 (30, 31, 32...) you'll get 27. So on and so forth.

Ok:
You'll ALWAYS end up wth a number which is a multiple of 9, regardless of which number you pick, for reasons which someone else outlined.
Therefore, the multiples of 9 in the grid (9, 18, 27,36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81,) have ..let's say, the symbol of a star next to them and all other numbers have random symbols. The number you are left with is going to be either 9, 18, 27 or whatever (basically a multiple of 9) and so the symbol which the screen guesses for you is going to be a star. When you do it again the same rule applies, but the symbol changes. Have a look the next time you do it; all the multiples of 9 have the same symbol next to them, and this is thesame symbol that is guessed by the screen.
Does that help?

It's just one of those things about multiples of 9 really..just like how every mulitple of 9 adds up to 9 if you add the individual digits together.

QUOTE(Young and hopeless @ Jan 20 2005, 03:38 PM)
When you subtract the end number you are left with a multiple of ten eg
53
-3
=50
Ok? This is always the case.
Now, when you subtract the 1st number (the 5 in this case) you are left with 'multiple of ten (50) minus the number 10 gets multiplied by (5)"
For example:
50 - 5
Do you see that?
Now, every multiple of 9 is one of these 'multiple of ten minus the number 10 gets multiplied by"
(72 for example is 80-8. 63 is 70-7)
and so on,so you always end up with a multiple of 9.
So there.
This could be better explained no doubt with n's and x's but I'm no mathematician, so that'll have to do..

Ok,well, since it knows that the number you have will be a multiple of 9, it just puts a star nect to all the multiples of 9 in the grid and when you click on the square it shows you a star.
The next time it puts an arrow next to all the multiples of 9 on the grid, and when you click, lo and behold, an arrow.

I don't see how you can understand how it gets a multiple of 9 and not get the second bit. Ok, once again.
The number you have will either be:
9, 18, 27,,36, 45, 54, 63, 72 or 81. Ok. The number will ALWAYS be one of these.
The grid has numbers with random symbols next to them. Except they aren't so random as every time the same symbol appears next to 9, 18, 27 and so on.
The symbol that you click on is always the same symbol next to the 9, 18,27 etc because this is the way the page is coded or programmed or whatever.
Does that help?

Asparagus Sin Drum

It's not maths related though.
It knows that you'll get one out of 9 numbers, and so puts a star next to all of them AND puts a star in a greybox.
How is that hard to understand?
When it does it again, it just changes the symbol.
Do it and have a look; the same symbol is next to 9,18,27,36,45, 54,63,72 and 81 AND is in the grey box.
