Full Version: Mainstream, or obscure?
The Vines Message Board > Off Topic > Music

Ok. I've been through several music fan websites and I noticed an interesting phenomenon taking its place in a few forums: WHY DO (SOME) PEOPLE KEPT BASHING ARTISTS WHO ARE CONSIDERED 'MAINSTREAM'? I mean, what's the problem with 'mainstream' music? is it just because Britney Spears is 'pop' and pop is often said to be 'mainstream'? If one is truly a fan and is confident in his/her choice of music, why spending so much time confirming to himself that he is not a 'pop' or 'mainstream' music fan? I personally don't give a shit about Britney, but those "label believers" are really pissing me off... I don't care about what label The Vines has... are they the "combination of The Beatles and Nirvana"? are they "sick as junkies"? Please, give me a break!

Yeah I know what you mean. Lately it seems like the new "cool" thing for the indie kids is to only like bands no one has heard of. Then when the band they like gets to be even semi-mainstream, they act as if they never liked them and suddenly hate everyone who likes the band. dry.gif

An example would be The Killers.
LateNightRadio
i agree, but i have to say the killers are far too talented to be on mtv with the crap that they play. i have no problem with the fact that they are getting popular, but i hate it when people like bands for the wrong reasons, like because theyre on mtv, or like you were saying, because no one has heard of them. i dont really know if thats anything like what you are talking about but whatever. i hate it when people use labels too. theyre what kill great bands. i know a lot of people that hate the vines because of the labels that they hear other people put on them, but have never heard any of their music besides that ride clip on the itunes commercial.
Luv.
I freakin hate labeling music. Especially today when so many bands can't possibly fall into just one category.

I was going to say that I found it surprising that this thread exists on this forum, because so many members here seem so guilty of this sort of prejudice.

But then I realised that there were only 4 or so replies anyway, which speaks for itself really.

And yes, 'buggeroff' is right. It's so ridiculous, it truly is.
kaleidoscope_eyes
so true. i wrote a couple of paragraphs on a similar subject somewhere on this forum.
Maxwell Demon
I never really paid attention to all that stuff

I just listen to what i listen to

I'm not surprised to see my thread being 'unpopular'... that's the way it is/and has always been. cool.gif I don't know why, but my posts are ALWAYS those being ignored.

You are right... many members here are guilty of this prejudice... that is why I want to post the thread so they are aware of it. Well... most of them seem to ignore it right away... tongue.gif

So true. I found that disturbing because nowadays music seem vulnerable... good music can be easily killed by those "indie kids".

LOL. Remember the "Parental Advisory" label? My mom was quite 'calm' when she saw the label... but then after she listened to HIGHLY EVOLVED for a while she turned off the stereo. *Cough* I thought "Get Free" was pretty good. tongue.gif

It is definetely unfair to judge a band by only listening to one hit single... I don't think "Ride" can defined the "mood" or "spirit" of WINNING DAYS at all... I'm not a big fan of the ipod commercial, but the album is truly amazing!

I dont like it when people like bands for the wrong reason, for example becasue the lead is hot, or because everyone else likes them.... And i listen to basically everything from black sabbath to Britney Spears so yeah...

Yes, but occasionally I can see the point. If a band becomes more popular it (this is not using the Killers as an example incidentally) is sometimes because they have changed their sound somewhat and they now play music which is more..crowd pleaser perhaps. The original fans might not like this change in style and therefore go off them.

not really. American Idiot could have come right off of Dookie to be honest.
LateNightRadio
i think american idiot is a bit more mature lyrically than most of dookie. i completely agree about the changing sound. that has happened to me a lot, no bands in particular come to mind though, and people thought of me as a poser or that i was just trying to be indie.
