THE VINES ANNOUNCE CANCELLED SHOWS
It is with a great deal of regret that The Vines today announced that they have cancelled all of their Australian festival appearances - Homebake, Pyramid Rock and Big Day Out - and their forthcoming Japanese tour scheduled for late November.
Craig Nicholls’ mental condition has deteriorated extremely rapidly over the past month to the point where he requires immediate help over an extended period of time.
Craig’s fellow band members Hamish Rosser, Ryan Griffiths and Brad Heald are all extremely saddened by this turn of events and wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the fans, friends and family who have shown faith in the band since their successful return to the live stage in 2006.
"On behalf of The Vines we would like to extend our sincerest apologies to those of you who have bought tickets to see us perform and will not get to do so” said Hamish. “We are all absolutely devastated that we've been forced to cancel all upcoming shows as there's nothing we love more than playing on stage before an enthusiastic audience. We ask for your understanding in this situation”
The band and management wish to extend a massive thanks to all of the promoters who showed such faith in the band by adding them to their bills, and to thank each and every one of them for their sensitivity and understanding of the band’s situation.
Big Day Out Co-Ordinator Sahara Herald Shepherd said
“The entire Big Day Out family is deeply saddened by the news that Craig Nicholls and his band The Vines will not be joining us on our 2009 summer tour. The Vines performances at the 2007 Big Day Out were nothing short of dazzling and they will be greatly missed. That said, we recognise that now is the time for Craig to focus on re-gaining his health. Our thoughts and best wishes are with him and his family at this time. “
The band and Craig’s family would like to ask that sensitivity be shown at a difficult time and ask that this statement be taken as their only comment on this matter.
Thankyou
The Vines

Oh my goodness. oh my Buddha.
I can do nothing but cry...
I might have to think like I was lucky one who could see them in Fujirock this summer..
Most of Japanese fans could never see The Vines gig ever so.
One of my friends said "If The Vines can't come to Japan, how about The Vines (or the promoter) invite all the Japanese fans who got tickets to Sydney to see their show?".
Well...this is just a kidding though.
But seriously I started thinking to come to OZ to see their gigs, if it is the only way....
I really wish Craig feel better.
Then I hope they will re-arrange Japanese dates, in the future. Hopefully.

I think everyone thought it was going well. He looked so fucking happy to be playing both times I saw them, so this has come as a huge shock. He's been making comments about "talking to a doctor about [his] feelings" for a while, though, and Joel (Wolf & Cub) mentioned that he had been struggling a bit, so Idk.

This is my first post on this site. I have been a constant lurker since I became a fan of the Vines but never join forums, I finally decided to join a forum to show my support for Craig and the Vines.
I'm sure, like every other fan when I read they cancelled their Perth show I was really worried for Craig's health. It saddens me to read this statement - I wish AAALLLL the best in the world for Craig; I can't simply imagine what Craig is going through but I hope he gets back to a healthy and happy place even if that means away from the spotlight of the Vines. Your health is always # 1 priority and no fan would ever wish for you to perform when you aren't feeling up to it. Best wishes for Craig, the Nicholls family, the Band and everyone involved xox.
Wishing you all the best Craig!!:: current mood :: sad

well, he doesn't actually have a disease, thats the wrong word to use. He has a neurological disorder.
Wow, this is some pretty bad news. I was just about to buy my Big Day Out tickets when I found out about this. I was mostly going for the Vines, so now i don't think I'll bother. But that doesn't matter, I'm just concerned for Craig's wellbeing. I guess this tour was just too much for him. He seemed to be acting quite strange at the Melbourne show, and more than just the usual Craig strangeness. I really hope he recovers soon.

No. A disorder is an abnormality, wheras a disease usually implies illness, with an external source or influence. AS is classified as a disorder.

I gotta say,
"Craig Nicholls’ mental condition has deteriorated extremely rapidly "
The way they've written that is kinda worrying.
It sucks that they've cancelled the shows,
But well what can you do.

Edit:
@ Clever Napkins.
A disorder can be classed as a disease too. I learn it in Biology, there are 9 types of disease, with "mental" being one of them. It's classed as "Changes to the mind, with or without a known cause."
So AS is a disorder, but it also classes as a disease I suppose.
But the word disease just sounds... horrible.
Anyway, poor Craig.

Change being the operative word. Nothing has changed in Craig's brain to lead to Aspergers, he was born with it. As far as any evidence we have shows, anyway. Which is one of the reasons it is classed as a disorder rather than a disease.

Anorexia is actually classified as a disorder in the DSM, but is generally referred to as a disease.
There's a lot of conjecture about it, and they can be used fairly interchangably.
What a pointless arguement.

Nov 14 2008, 03:34 PM
Craig is not diseased. His brain isn't deteriorating or sick - he was born with a tweaked brain so that he experiences things differently, for better and for worse.
Ask the AS community if they are diseased, and you will be scoffed at, jsyk.
~anyway~
Craig, take some time off and rest. Don't push yourself, mate. I promise we'll all still be here when you're ready to come back

I'm sure its nothing like a band break up. Theyve been through this before and they know how to handle Craig!

I honestly don't want to think too much about what could be going on, I'm sad enough as it is

At least this time it's...I don't want to say expected...but I doubt it's as much of a shock as it was the first time 'round with tour cancellations and what not, so hopefully everyone will recover in due time.
