Posted by Music News Desk on November 12 2008 MySummerMusic.com: Hey Hamish, how’s it going?
The Vines – Hamish: Hey mate, things are good, just relaxing & doing some interviews.
MySummerMusic.com: You have recently been on tour in support of your new album, how have the shows been on the tour & how was the audience response to the new material?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah man the shows have been awesome. We have done some really cool shows with most selling out. We play to a younger audience, so all were all ages as a lot of our fans are in school you know. The response was great, the kids loved our new songs, so it was cool all around.
MySummerMusic.com: You have recently mad a reappearance to the festival scene, with appearances at the 2007 & 2008 Splender In The Grass festival, how were these shows for the band?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah splender was really cool & was great to play for our comeback. The set we did in 2007, that was something special, as we managed to keep it a secret from everyone & we were a real surprise to the fans & it went off. The show we did this year was great, there was a cool lineup to play alongside & we pulled a nice crowd. The stage isn’t as big as other main stages, but is comfortable & was fun to play on.
MySummerMusic.com: You will be playing the Pyramid Rock festival over the new year, are you looking forward to this one?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah it’ll be fun, to be honest the only 2 things I know about Phillip Island are the moto gp race & penguins so it will be an interesting time. The festival will be great as its on new years, so to be playing a festival is cool & as its not too far from home its all good.
MySummerMusic.com: Well I suppose at the festivals, you won’t get as long a set as you have had on tour, with the limited time of your set at the festival, will you be doing anything special for the fans?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah we’ll probably just play the hits I guess. I mean that really is what our fans will want so we’ll give them exactly that. With the 4 records we have, we’ve put out a few singles & other things so pretty much just play the songs the people want & keep the festival rolling, and it’s new years eve, so we’ll be doing what we can to keep the party going.
MySummerMusic.com: With Pyramid Rock, have you look at the lineup & is there anyone you are looking to see?
The Vines – Hamish: I’m not too familiar with the lineup, can you name a couple bands playing?
MySummerMusic.com: Yeah, its bands including The Black Keys, The Living End, Birds Of Tokyo, Gyroscope etc.
The Vines – Hamish: Ok, yeh its coming back to me, it’s a prettty sweet lineup & we’ve got a bunch of bands we know playing. I’m looking forward to seeing Karnivool who I think are playing, I’m a metalhead at heart so I’m keen for that. Other bands I’m looking forward to are the living end as I’m good friends with these guys, so it will be a good day.
MySummerMusic.com: Now hamish, having played many festivals, do you have any advice to give to fans of yours who may be coming to their first festival?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah, firstly do not wear thongs as you will pay immensely. Not only do your feet get wet & dirty, but they get stomped on & can get cut by glass bottles or cans. Secondly, don’t even think about lugging around a backpack, take what you need in pockets, its just easier & smarter. Besides that, I guess thehy will just learn as the day takes them, it’s how I learnt.
MySummerMusic.com: Now also, having played a number of national & international festivals, do you have any memorable moments from a festival?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah, I’ve got a few, the one which sticks out now is when we did our first overseas festival. We did the Glastenbury festival in the UK & that was cool, there was a crowd of like 10000 people I think. In the first few songs, I kept my head down & did my thing on drums, but as the set went on I looked up & saw the crowd & behind it the countryside & felt really relaxed being in such a diverse environment, so that was cool.
MySummerMusic.com: Just curious, can you tell me any favourite music festivals of yours you have played at?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah, it’d have to be the Big Day Out. It’s the premier festival on the Australian calender & the way it is set out is really cool. The promoters set up the festival to run for like 3 weeks so its really easy going & they set up the backstage to be on even ground, so the headliners & the openers can mix & make friends. It’s really just a friendly festival & is really fun to play, so I’d say that one for sure.
MySummerMusic.com: Now finally on festivals, with playing or attending festivals, do you have any favourite artist performances?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah, it’ll probably show my age but I’d say Soundgarden, the ramones & probably the smashing pumpkins. These 3 were all great, I saw them at various festivals in the early to mid 90’s & they all did great shows. The way they played really captivated me & I always remember those shows.
MySummerMusic.com: Just quickly, do you guys have much coming up besides the festival dates?
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah we’ve written a few new songs, so hopefully sometime in the near future we can record. For now, we are doing the dates scheduled to play the new record & then we may do some more touring nationally or overseas, either way there’s a lot happening for us.
MySummerMusic.com: Well Hamish, I’d like to thankyou for your time & hope you have a nice day.
The Vines – Hamish: Yeah, thanks mate, maybe I’ll see you at one of the festivals we’re doing, have a nice day, Bye.
