Waw, all this looks pretty confusing. But I'm gonna go and agree that The Vines have money,

But atleast theyre not 30 seconds to Mars.

Who got paid nothing for their previous album and are being sued by virgin records who claim they owe them anothjer $1.4 million.

MisplacedKeys, I can't help but love you in this thread.

Craig can't be that broke. Otherwise he'd be writing top 40 songs like Liz Phair.

Slash - I am sorry, but you are pissing in the wind. The hardest part for me is working out which hard-done by-Aussie-nothing band you are in. I guess it doesn't matter we wouldn't know the name anyway.

"what proof do you have the Vines would have got paid whatever else a starting band got paid" yeah because most bands have a global bidding war for their services dont they!!

Absolutely future advances can be negotiated as part of the initial deal. Sometimes deals are front end loaded (largest advance on first album) then different figures are negotiated for subsequent albums. Labels offer a large advance for the first album if the artist is in demand and being chased by rivals. This would be how Craig made the majority, not all, of his money methinks.

Slash somone has explained the advance/loan/recoup process to you badly - then you've misinterpreted already crap info.

Capitol punted heavily on the Vines and lost. The first advance was in the millions. I have accurate info to confirm this. No, I want say how and from who. Capitols loss was Craig in particular's gain (and of course W&G!). The front end loaded nature of the deal meant poor Hamish effectively missed the boat, but dont dont feel sorry for him, has done well since

This is my last post on this, get a record industry lesson somewhere else Slash. You seem to delight in the Vines lack of commercial success since HE. The point is they already had success, Craig made enough moolah to live very comfortably for the rest of his life and the only reason he would need album sales is so someone else can pay for fancy studios and expensive producers

The end

I made a statement, you challeneged the statement on a basis of an "article" which conveniently isnt around anymore.
So far neither you or matterz have produced any links or evidence to support your claims, where as I have.
So I dont see how im the unreliable one.

I remember the article Ursa was talking about, and it was posted here at some point if you'd care to look. I don't remember if the full article was posted or if it was just the link, though.

0.5 pounds × 1 500 000 copies = 750 000 pounds = roughly 1 600 000 Australian dollars on Highly Evolved album sales alone.
Winning Days sold, what, 600 000 copies? × 0.5 pounds = 300 000 pounds = roughly 640 000 Australian dollars on WD album sales alone.
Yes, there are other expenses, but there are also other sources of money, which one of your divine internet sources actually lists, namely:
Record Clubs, Compilation CDs, Samplers (low-priced albums in which a few artists are featured), Premiums (albums sold with other products, such as cereal), Film Soundtrack Album, Music Video Sales, Greatest Hit’s[sic] Album, Foreign Royalties (song played in some foreign country radio stations pay royalties, unlike the US), Master Use License (music used in a movie, television, commercial, the Internet, CD-ROM and DVD), etc.
And you wave them off as unimportant when in fact, they add up to lots of 'pennies'.

Basically, "my radial claim" that Craig earned 2 million with album sales is actually quite feasible, even by your standards. I'm not suggesting a very large part of that wasn't spent on paying off other expenses, either, but yeah, about $2 million of starting profit (that is, before everything else was paid) sounds quite plausible, as opposed to your very precise estimate of 'pennies'.

The expenses are taken out of the rest of the sales money though, so none of the $2 million would even have been spent on them. The record companies don't take 95% of the money and then make you pay pack whatever they've advanced you.

eurgh.
This is my last point, MisplacedKeys, your quick maths on their royalties don't take into account all the expensise that would have been taken out. In my mind, seeing as Highly Evovled era was a very costly time for them, it wouldnt have been till they nearly sold a million till they would have started getting their 50ps, so i sould say it woulda been 600.000 X 0.5 = 300,000. That is alot, but im sure Craig would have wanted to have split some of that money with the others, and even though yes it is a lot of money, I wouldnt say its enough t last 6 years and still keep you living a life of luxury.

But anyways, just got back from Reading Festival, and have a new outlook of I cant be arsed to argue this anymore.
Im just gona agree to disagree.

I personally think Craig isnt loaded at all, and im yet to be convinced otherwise.

You guys are obviously the same but visa versa.
Untill we see Craig busking for cash, or being helicopters into every gig I guess we will never know.

oh and p.s Rage Against The Machine live.... FREAKING AWESOME!

This is unbelievable. I used a number you magically pulled out of your arse, and your only problem with it is that I didn't take into account a random sum you equally made up? You don't get to snip and juggle their expenses in a way that suits you, especially when your "argument" consists of as many holes as your average lace cloth. If your statement happens to be true, it won't be so because of your superior analytic reasoning, but because it was a lucky guess. Well, I say lucky ...
