Full Version: Ryan's solo stuff
The Vines Message Board > The Vines > The Vines General Discussion

Ok I dont know about anyone else, but I've heard yeah or read or something that Ryan has some solo material. I dont know how much pull he has in the Vines or whatever, BUT

I really think this could be good, Ryan has great music taste, and we all know hes talented, I'm thinking I'd like to hear his stuff. I'm wondering how hard he's willing to work on it to get it out there? I know Vines fans would be totally into it, and probably a lot of other people. We could have an Albert H Jr. part II on our hands here. For lack of a better comparison?

Yeah, Hamish said it once in an interview, I believe. There's a thread about it somewhere on the board, but I'm far too lazy to look it up, plus, if I remember correctly, there wasn't much useful information anyway. However, I once found a comment on somebody's MySpace that said something along the lines of "Ryan of The Vines asked me to record with him", so there definitely were plans for some demoing and/or an album, if nothing else.

i was lucky enough to get to talk to ryan about his solo stuff - mind, this was back in september 06 when they toured oz for a week in support of VV. anyway, ryan described his songs as heavily influenced by (surprise, surprise) the dandy warhols and brmc. what he'd recorded, he'd done with craig's help at their homes. he laughed and said craig worried about him leaving the band to pursue his solo stuff, which i can totally see craig half-kidding/half-serious his bff might leave him. tongue.gif

i'd love to hear some of it myself, but it's not looking like it will ever see the light of day. poo.

This calls for a huge 'awwwwwww' moment. wub.gif As if Ryan could ever leave Craig's band.

Duno what he would sound guitar wise, i love BRMC so it could be interesting.
Vocally however, after hearing him doing back up vocals, I wouldt hold high hopes.
If he was just writing the songs and got someone else to sing them I think it could work.
But as nice guy as I think Ryan is, he just cant sing!

Ummmm, you're completely wrong. He's got a nice voice, and his backing is actually quite good.

mmm im guessin its all down to personal opinion.
But his backing vocals at the MTV awards were out of tune and were criticised in reviews.
Also all the other backing vocals ive seen him do have always been off key.
Brad is the better backing vocalist, dont kno why he doesnt take more vocal duties.
Ryans a cool guy, but cant really sing.

The only reason Ryan's backing @ MTV Awards was criticised was because reviewers can't flippin' tell the difference between Ryan's and Brad's voice. Brad is the one that kind of ruined the song, sorry to say.
Listen to anything they played before Brad joined, especially Channel V '06 sessions (I recommend DLttR, Get Free and so on) and then compare it to CD Live they did in the same year, but with Brad (listen to DLttR, Brad joins in in the last chorus).

Im sorry but are you deaf???

i dont mean to be rude, but the CD live performance of DLTTR is only saved vocally by Brad!!!!

Ryan is awweeeffuulllyy out of tune througout the entire song, the backing vocals are mildly saved when brad comes in at the end.
Ryan always sounds very nasel!

Incase people are wondering, we are referring to this performance

seriously though, its one thing saying Ryan can sing, but to say he does a better job than Brad is ludicrous!

Btw I think your also getting confused on whose doing what on the backing vocals.
In the MTV awards performance brad only repeated the line "He's a rocker" and a little bit of harmonising at the end of the chorus, how a reviewer could quote that as being out of key singing is beyond me.
Ryan does the rest of the backing vocals, and quite frankly doesnt do a very good job! The "yeeeeaaah" bit is pretty poor!

Then don't be.

How anyone could prefer Brad's backing to Ryan's in that particular video clip is completely beyond me, but as you said, it might be just a matter of taste. I can only speak for myself, but I strongly prefer Ryan's voice, even though he is sometimes awfully quiet - I think it matches the colour of Craig's voice a lot better, but I might be alone in this.

The thing about the MTV performance is, Ryan is very quiet, and you can hardly hear him. Both the 'yeah yeah yeah' and 'he's a rocker' bits are mostly done by Brad, unless Ryan had a massive cold that day. You can see he's standing quite far away from the microphone, too. Trust me, I know Ryan's voice.

Bottom line is, I'd love to hear Ryan sing, I think he could do really well in controlled studio surroundings.

Ryans fine at singing, if he just had a little bit more of confidence he would sound great!

Brad however doesn't have the best singing voice, but I completely respect him as a bass guitarist as he can write some bad ass bass lines!
mooshell
I'd be down for it, as long as he doesn't leave the band! I think people are getting Ryan and Brad's backing vocals mixed up, someone said Ryan tends to sound nasal and I'm pretty sure that's Brad. He's the one that does the "ahhhhhh" part in Outtathaway right? tongue.gif And I sense some of the timidness might be from him not wanting to over power Craig's voice or something. But anyway, backing and leading vocals are two different things, we haven't heard him do lead vocals yet so who knows, it might be good.
pure_wonderment
From what I've heard of his backing vocals I think he does a terrific job. His voice is indeed very soft but that's because his vocals in the band are meant to compliment Craig's voice and not dominate it.
Well even in his soft singing I reckon he has a very nice voice.
Yeh so I'd love to hear his solo material smile.gif
Coca Cola Craig
I've heard he did more electronic music, or rather electronic rock.

And maybe he chiefly writes instrumentals?

yeh we asked him and he said he already recorded stuff, but it twas 2 years ago, I mean, does it really take THAT long?

Why not country music?
Just imagine, Ryan doing an electro version of Cotton Eye Joe and Craig, Brad & Hamish dancing all around rolleyes.gif
