The Vines - He's A Rocker
Exclusive Video Premiere
4pm Fri 5 June on whatUwant

The Vines are back with He's A Rocker, the killer new video from their rocking beast of an LP, Melodia. You can check out the exclusive worldwide premiere of the cutting-edge clip this Friday, only on whatUwant!

The Vines' He's A Rocker video was inspired by the work of cult filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and has an otherworldly cinematic feel. Shot with a steadicam in one continuous shot, it takes in the live band rocking out and a crazy cast of characters, from sexy 80s dancers to puppies and teenagers getting busy. The tune is pure, energetic rock and roll and the clip is a visually stunning wake up call announcing loud and clear that The Vines are back, baby!

He's A Rocker is just a teaser for the band's killer new record, produced by Rob Schnapf, who was at the helm of their worldwide breakthrough record, Highly Evolved. Brace yourself for the Melodia LP, due out July 12.

There's something weird about the video. Just sort of something that makes it seem ace, but I can't figure out what. :S (Of course The Vines have something do with it) pinch.gif

Hey first time poster... used to use Dreamintheinsane.. but it kept forgetting to keep my logged in and i forgot my log in details...

Am I the only one who thinks this video is a shambles??
It doesnt even make sense... and screams out CHEAP!
The dancers have the exact same danceroutine as Arctic Monkeys Brianstorm video... and to be honest the whole thing looks like a cheap attempt!
I love the Vines, and I think the new album is gonna have some awesome songs on it... but the song isn't that great... and the video sucks!!!
I personally think signing up the Ivy League was their biggest mistake.
Their comeback could have been amazing, but with no new site, a bad choice in first single, and a reaaallllyy shoddy music video, its just turned into a bit of a disaster!
Im hoping when the album is released they'll release a single in the UK and will choose a better song and make a better video!

Well. They do have a budget so small that they apparently can't fund a proper website with ( rolleyes.gif ), so I don't think any of us expected the video to be majestic and breath-takingly amazing. But I don't think it really matters what the video is like as long as it gets played.

I watch it. I dance like man from beginning. I rock music.

I didn't like the video all that much.

first off, SlashNX, welcome to the forum. smile.gif

and, yes, there have been more than a few rants here on the forum about missed opportunities and botched promotion in regards to the vines (mis)management. as a fan, it seems all i can do is continue to shake my head and hope that mgmt.'s shortcomings won't totally cripple the vines supposed comeback with this album.

as for the video, i find it about as 'meh' as the song. sorry, i just don't think the song is anything special - certainly not something that's going to rope in new fans - and proclamations that the video is a tribute of sorts to stanley kubrick(!) make me laugh.gif and then blink.gif .

like ursa pointed out, it's not like they're working these days with a mega-budget, but then again you'd think creative minds could come up with a cool and unique video concept that doesn't necessarily cost that much. coldplay first hit it big with 'yellow' and all that video features is chris martin walking down a beach in slo-mo. simple, cheap yet memorable can be done!!

ever the eternal optimist, i'm hoping they'll pull it together and surprise us by the time the album is released!!

Hey wonkytooth, cheers for the greetings.
I aggree with everything youve said, yes they had a small budget, but could have done so much more with it by keeping it simple. just like Gross out or something!

The Coldplay video is good and simple i aggree... though I feel you may have missed that it magicly turns from night to day. But still its simple and effective!

Oh my, the video sucked BIG time.... I mean, I waited so long, but they've become something else not what they used to be... mad.gif

Thy look like a fashion retro-rock band now with a video like this, and The Vines usually used to stand out with their video concepts. It's a cheap copy of an Arctic monkeys video which I hate. ohmy.gif
Untutored-Youth
It's starting to get on my nerves a bit now, there is a concept a few people aren't grasping...

SMALLER BUDGET = CHEAPER VIDEOS.

There is nothing The Vines can do about that.

Which just speaks in favour of the point I had made earlier - it doesn't matter what the concept is and how insanely dull it is, as long as it gets massive exposure. Nobody gave a shit what, let's say, Rihanna's Umbrella video looked like either.

I can't say I liked that at all... It's true, it's possible to make a cool video with a low budget, but they didn't. The highlight, for me, was the dancers busting that Thriller move...

When I heard the "single" I thought it was, Sorry Vines, a big step backwards. Perhaps looking for a new demographic while alienating your older fans?

Now the video confirms there is something off...a comeback? and where and what are they coming back from exactly?

There is just too much stiff competition these days in music and if the Vines think theyre going to pull one off and make money with songs and vids like this and not tour extensively theyre highly mistaken as they have highly devovled.

peace out!

Maybe they evolved musically, but that video it's actually a regression, a video a newbie band would do.
MisplacedKeys
In a way, they are a newbie band - starting over after such a long period of time when everybody already more or less forgot about them, with another label and a shrunk fanbase.
Either way, they've changed; yet, you seem upset about it, saying that "they've become something else not what they used to be... mad.gif " and whatnot as if they needed to be a one trick pony that only did "Outtathaway!" or "Ride" type of videos and/or songs, and that's what's concerning.
I personally dislike *cough*hate*cough* the song, but I don't see why the video would be such a disaster; it's a nice, fun clip supporting the sarcastic tone of the song. Plus, the French gentleman at the start is pure genius.
Spaceship
listen i love the vines...but i thought this video was pretty bad and really led nowhere.
it seemed like there was just no concrete idea and they through somehting together.
i still love the song and the boys, but this video is pretty mediocre
HumansAreDead
The song is slightly below average and the video is good for being on an indie label budget. It does remind me of Silverchair's "If You Keep Losing Sleep" video because of everything that's going on in the background.
mmb0510
to me it seems the video was meant to be a bit sarcastic as was the song itself methinks, purpously cliche if you will...and not meant to be taken too seriously

Yeah, the only people that are gonna get that the song/video is meant to be sarcastic are the ones that have been exposed Craig's sarcastic humor...all the other people who are gonna see the video probably regularly watch MTV, so it's just gonna seem like another rock/pop music video. But whoever takes it seriously and doesn't get that the video is meant to be funny is retarded, I mean the guy in the begginning is an obvious give away. I think in a way it's making fun of how people take rock 'n roll music and make it into a culture of being cool/sex/drugs and all that and not about music. So they purposefully made a video to fit into the MTV music video cliche...pretty clever I'd say. Either that or I'm searching for a meaning that's not there and it's just supposed to be a fun video for a fun song, however you wanna look at it. tongue.gif I tend to over-analyze things though. dry.gif
mmb0510
QUOTE

people like that are the same people who look at the Vines' music at the 'face value' that Capitol gave them by putting out get free first and outtathaway and so on...i mean, i remember years ago people getting mad at the fact that God forbid the Vines are playing slow ballads for half their set...if it was the ballads that were put out as singles, then it would be opposite (people would get pissed when they played the harder stuff)...it's all about how they were/are marketed to the public...i would know i studied this crap in college...you can make almost anything look like something it's not and sell it to whoever the hell you 'target'....bla bla...and tbh, i think this is exactly what this video is making fun of, and no i didn't analyze it, that was my first impression...it's making fun of how artists nowadays have to fit into a certain mold that's popular this minute (i could go on forever about nice big record companies that choose, with all their leverage, to churn out the same crap until the hype dies out instead of honing original talent...but that's a whole other conversation)

bottom line...the people who only watch MTV and like the bands/artists who are popular this minute will most likely look at this video and either not care for it, or go all ga-ga over it because it's familiar and reminds them of the ten million other bands' videos the love o-so-much this minute...if those people get the album, they will either be all pissy cause again...God forbid there are ballads, or they might actually like them, hence making the Vines' fan base bigger (it's exactly how the lyrics to song go...the Vines don't have anything to lose, just potentially gain)...as for the Vines' established fans...anyone who's watched a single interview with them, shouldn't have to think too hard to figure out it's a joke/sarcasm type video

wow that was long, ok now i'm done, i might be wrong, maybe i'm right who knows, but that's my take on the whole topic
THE_MIDDLECLASS
I liked the vines from the very first time, and yes, they were underrated and Outthathaway and Get Free were cliche videos for the teen angst, is just that I dont know, with a simple tune and a simple video maybe they're just not trying that hard to grow up musically now that they've freedom since they're not forced to retribute Capitol money.

I guess that I shouldn't have been expecting that much when I read that there would be dancers and dogs. I seriously don't even get the video. Is there even anything to get? I agree, I would enjoy a video like that too, but do you think that would fit this type of song? I think it's funny how as soon as a song and video is released, the first thing people do is bitch about how this isn't the right single to give them the hype they need and over-analyze the song/video. I'm especially guilty of the second one, nice work detective shit-head michelle. laugh.gif

Theyre not looking for hype, but believe it or not, with all this "comeback" shit talk there WAS infact hype. Just cuz they arent looking for it, doesn't mean it wasnt or is not there.

If they wanna make songs we dont have to "think too hard about", then they can go right ahead...
Also I dont see anyone over analyzing anything, (just arguing over if its good or not) how can you over analyze a piece of crap? a crap video to go along with a crap song. the end!

It's true, they did say they were making a comeback and doing a whole "world domination" type thing. But I think that just means they're really confident and sincerely want as many people to hear the album as possible and maybe even try to do more gigs. Not necessarily be in as many magazine articles, do as many interviews, and get as many reviews as possible...who cares about that shit anyway. I gotta admit, I like the interviews though.

And people arguing over whether it's good or not is pointless, everyone's gonna have a different opinion and nobody's right so uh... huh.gif For example, I disagree with your opinion on the song/video being "crap" but I'm not going to argue with you 'cause it's just your opinion.
