Yeah! All those spellings at the end. I hate that. Right now we're learning passé simple in french class. But it's pointless coz passé simple is only used say if you're writing a fairy tale. Coz you can't speak passé simple or else it sounds really ugly. Present, passé composé and imparfait are the easiest in my opinion.
*

I'm French and I've never used the passé simple in all my life when I'm speaking! It's such a stupid form! And don't worry about all those verbs, even a lot of French people don't know them! The only usfeul ones are présent, passé composé, futur, imparfait and subjonctif présent. I don't know if any of you speak Spanish or Italian, but their verbs are even more difficult, they have all these ones + passé simple, and subjonctif passé (2 forms of in Spanish :s)
But I agree with everybody, French verbs are stupid! That's why I love English, your verns are so much easier! Well, except the modals... (huhu I love them rolleyes.gif )
HighlyWinning
French does have a lot of complicated things, but I found spanish harder (when I took french and spanish at school) but I'd started learning french since I was young so that will have helped a bit. I know a few words/phrases in french, but I know hardly anything in any other language (except English of course)

I haven't learnt subjonctif yet. But apparently that is also really hard. I can speak a bit of italian, but not enough to know anything about their verbs. That's more of a language that I'll understand when people speak it just because I manage to pick up the key words that allow me to get the main idea of the sentence. But I can't speak it myself except for a few little phrases.
laila
I agree, french is soooo hard! But I think it would be really cool if I could speak it. I can, for the most part but french people so fast I can hardly understand them! It takes me a couple minutes to realise what they just said. I'm not making fun of french people...I'm just very stupid.

Back on topic about accents. I loooove Craigs! It's so cute! Like everyone said, it's sorta a mixture of a lot of accents.

I wish dearly that I had one! But I'm not too sure if there's such a thing as a Canadian accent. It's basically American....but more french-ish.

I am learning French right now. I love it.

it does sound nice! are you american? cause my mom went there and said they were not that kindly towards americans sad.gif but I think she takes things personally. my dad was there in 2000 (actually my mom was there in 1999) so about the same time and he didn't have any problems with it. Oh well, I guess people's experiences are different.

well I have had a strange life for sure tongue.gif but no moving to other countries. It sounds neat to live in Germany, that's where most my family originated so I would like to go there some day. I definatley want to go to Europe, I was thinking of going there for study abroad instead of Australia, but I guess I decided I wanted to go to Australia first. I love traveling, so I'm sure I will make it there eventually!
Clara

It's so cute!!
And it's also really funny when people say something in French slang with a foreign accent! I'm currently trying to teach some expressions to my Scottish friend, it's adorable to hear her saying "je crève la dalle!" (to be very very very... hugnry, I don't know the expression in English!) with her Scottish accent! tongue.gif
A few months ago I met an Argentinian boy, and when I told him "I'm French", he told me the 2 sentences he knew in French: "Bonjour mon amour!" and "voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?" rolleyes.gif
I would fall in the arms of all the boys talking to me in French with a foreign accent! biggrin.gif

allie9609
You'll see kangaroos if you go outside Sydney. There is a lot of road kill here, you mainly see dead possums in Sydney, but when you're in the country you sometimes see kangaroos and wombats sad.gif .
Giulieta
Wow I didn't even know what a possum and a wombat were! Strange animals... huh.gif But they're nice! Possums are lovely! laugh.gif

Yeah there are dingos, but they aren't very common. I've never seen one in the wild. They can be dangerous, back in the 70s there was a family camping at Uluru (Ayers Rock) and their little baby was taken from their tent by a dingo and killed (Although some people thought the mum killed the baby and used the dingo as an excuse, she was even jailed for a few years before being cleared). I think that was the only death though.

Our possums are nice, they just get annoying when they get in your roof and run around at night. They don't carry diseases either and we don't have rabies in Australia smile.gif .

news to me ohmy.gif

At orientation this lady was saying it's much safer in Australia than here. She said you guys don't have handguns in homes?

I'm so sick of hearing about how some 17 year old shot his 12 year old brother when they got in a fight. Or how someone drove up the street and got shot through the window of their car for no reason. Last year I was going to the bus station...and well I thought it was the easiest way on the map...to go up Bailey avenue just past the university and go from there. I told my mom and brother my lovely route and they were like...what the fuck madeline? do you know that someone gets randomly shot there every week? huh.gif ooops. and I was driving my friends from toronto as well unsure.gif

Yeah automatic guns and all hand guns are illegal here. We have pretty low crime rates. Although there was like 3 or 4 drive by shootings last year, we never used to have them. Sometimes you also hear about people getting shot in robberys as well, but not very often. Did you see Bowling for Collumbine? I think there was a thing on it that compared the no. of people killed by guns a year, the USA had over 10,000 or something and Australia had like 60.
marilyn_monroe
isin't that sick? I just am so tired of it. why do people need handguns? seriously, why?
wow, only 3 or 4 driveby shootings? I turn on the news and it seems to happen in the city all the time, it's so sad. I think this 17 year old just shot someone...like a friend or brother perhaps out of rage or something and now he's in prison for life. and then you hear about all these accidents where someone ends up shooting someone. This is one thing I really am for, banning handguns.
allie9609
Yeah, I think handguns should be banned all over the world. In fact all guns (unless you need them for your job - like police, farmers etc). We only had gun control since 1996 when this psychopath went on a shooting rampage in a tourist spot in Tasmania. He walked into the cafe and opened fire, then walked out side and started shooting people on the street. He killed 26 people and injured a lot more. That was the worst gun crime ever committed here. So sad sad.gif .
marilyn_monroe
Oh that is terrible!! What a psychopath! sad.gif
Have you guys ever had school shootings at all?
I seriously feel a little unsafe where I am...well not as much as before, but I live right near Niagara Falls which is a power supply much of the east and midwest of the united states. Including huge cities like NYC. a copule years back (maybe even just one) there was a problem and everyone lost power. I was at a stoplight and it just went out. and I was like...oh that's just one light. and all the way home it was chaos. then I turned on a battery powered radio and I felt so bad for those people on the subways and stuff in NYC, that had to have been horrible. it was just chaos everywhere for days.
So anyway I always thought this was a prime location for terrorist attacks sad.gif
allie9609
Ooh that's scarey! Luckily Australia isn't much of a target (although the government played the terrorism card like there was no tomorrow during the election campaign dry.gif . At least they weren't releasing biased photos and lying to the press like they did last time when they claimed refugees were throwing their children over board to scare people into voting for them to protect our boarders, as they put it "we don't want people like that in our country" (in actual fact the children were in the water because the boat they were in was sinking). Sorry I'll shut up about that now, some of the things our government has done can really get me angrey).
Yeah I heard about that big blackout! That would have been scarey, the longest blackout I've ever had here was for about 2 hours, but we've never lost power to the whole city or anything.
No we've never had a school shooting, in fact we've never had a murder at a school. Sometimes you hear about someone getting stabbed (at our school this kid in 9th grade stabbed another kid in the hand), and last year one girl got shot in the arm with a cross bow.
marilyn_monroe
I hate parites lying just to get elected!! All canadates always make stuff up...I'm so sick of politics, it's just a bunch of shit. Like those commercials on TV mocking the other candidate...and it goes both ways, they each have a stupid commercial like that. All I can say is at least your governemt isin't doing such stupid things like ours. I personally think that Sadam was a horrible person...and I know it's not politically correct, but I think we could have just hired a sharp shooter and killed him and then started up a new government. But it's not so easy cause then there's his supporters....this shit is complicated. I just don't like going and starting a war without the approval of then UN. So dumb. Bush loves wars. Asshole.

Ok I'm done with that. wow, I can't believe you've never had a school shooting...I mean that's wonderful but the US has so many derranged people. So messed up.

You've never had a blackout at your house for days? oh god we would get them in the winter when the icicles on the powerlines broke them. that sucks cause you have no heat or anything sad.gif
allie9609
We don't have the ads where personal insults are being thrown, luckily our political parties focus a bit more on the issues (even though they do twist them to suit their own agendas). We also don't have that huge rally thing you guys do. All we get really are ads, some tv appearances then we all go off and vote.

I'm completely against the war too, I was in one of the protest rallys in Sydney just before the war started. Even though it was the USA that started the war and used fake 'intelligence' to justify its cause, Australia went along with it and sent troops as well. This was despite the fact our own intelligence agencies were saying the US intelligence was wrong. Our PM's line was "no body told me". Pffft. So our government either doesn't consult it's own intelligence agencies before it goes to war, or only listens to our intelligence agencies when they have something to report that will help them with their political ambitions. mad.gif .
I don't know if sending in a sharp shooter would have helped though, it could have sparked a civil war and people would still hate the USA for interfering. I don't know what they should have done, but falsifying intelligence to justify a war is definitely not something that should have happened.

How depressing sad.gif .

To lighten the mood:

the whole thing is depressing. I mean Iraq seems like an impossible situation, either way everyone is fucked. I definately hate Sadam with a passion and want him to rott in hell (and I never say that about people.) He has tortured and killed way to many people....so honestly I don't know. I don't understand enough about politics but I DO know that jumping into some bullshit war like that was not a good idea. I mean he has been doing this for a long time so I don't understand why we had to do something "right now" instead of just waiting for what the UN has to say. But then I think of Sadam and I think of a modern day Hitler (ok that was a bit of an exaggeration) and then I feel he had to be kocked out...but then all those other evil rulers....and....wow I can't think about politics without getting a headache blink.gif I just think we can't possibly do everything or make everything right. It's all a hopeless case, and I think Bush is using this as a lovely oportunity to get oil.

Well, yeah I get what you are saying about the Australian governemt. Sounds typical of anywhere, using slander to get what they want. Making up stuff just to get people to do what they want them to. It's all a bunch of crap, but it dosen't sound as bad as it is here....So sick of the whole thing. And they tell us that in Australia lots people are going to ask us about politics and the war. I think I won't know what to say and my head will seriously explode.

Ok that was enough, cute picture smile.gif
cordova94
I think we just need to have better gun education. There have always been guns in my house (my dad is a hunter and a target shooter). I know how to use them, have used them and know how to keep them locked and safe. I think that is the real problem. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
