i used to take karate. i was half a belt away from a black belt. then i quit. im still proud of that.

my friend does taekwondo.. she can kick some serious butt. shes national champion. and shes about a metre tall

I studied taekwondo once...I miss it. Maybe I'll start martial arts again...it's fun and useful. I've always loved it.

THE Vines' frontman Craig Nicholls, who put Australian rock back on the international stage after 20 years, has been diagnosed with a debilitating brain disorder.

Nicholls' condition, known as Asperger's syndrome, was revealed in Balmain Local Court yesterday when charges of assault and malicious damage were unconditionally dismissed.

The charges followed an incident at the Annandale Hotel on May 27 when the singer-songwriter allegedly kicked a photographer's camera during a performance for radio station Triple M competition winners.

After the brief hearing, an elated Nicholls walked out of court holding up his arms and said: "I'm free."

He attended the 10-minute hearing with his brother Matt and managers Andy Kelly, Andy Cassell and Pete Lusty.

US and European tours to support the release of the band's second album Winning Days were cancelled in June to allow Nicholls to recover from "mental and physical exhaustion".

Despite years of examination by psychologists and psychiatrists, Nicholls was finally diagnosed after his management team were alerted to the existence of Asperger's syndrome (AS) by one of the band's crew members.

They engaged a world authority on autism spectrum disorders, Professor Tony Attwood who is based in Brisbane, to examine Nicholls.

His family completed two extensive surveys relating to Nicholls' behaviour during childhood, which are used to diagnose the syndrome, and Professor Attwood confirmed the condition after meeting the singer in August.

Nicholls' behaviour has perplexed fans and critics for the past three years.

The gifted songwriter became more erratic and abusive on and off stage as the band's success and touring commitments increased.

Professor Attwood said yesterday extensive touring would cause extraordinary stress and eventual nervous breakdown to AS sufferers because of their inability to socially interact and the changes to their environment.

But sufferers can excel at music, mathematics and mechanical skills.

"Craig lives for his music. It's his therapy, it's the way he communicates, it's his life," Professor Attwood said.

The Vines' management said Nicholls and his fellow band members – Patrick Matthews, Hamish Rosser and Ryan Griffiths – would now start work on the band's third album.

They have sold more than two million copies of their debut Highly Evolved and follow-up Winning Days since bursting on to the international arena in 2002.

"He can't wait to get back into the rehearsal studio and we can't wait to hear what he's going to come up with," Mr Kelly said.

The Vines will be unable to undertake major tours because of Nicholls' condition but plan to perform occasional concerts.

Capitol, their record label in the US, and EMI, their Australian label, have confirmed their support for the band and will release the new album.

i took ONE lesson when i was six. i got scared and wouldnt go back

i signed up for it when i was 9 and quit in literally 5 minutes.

i got my blackbelt...it took a while though

my brother took karate for years and would teach me what they learned when he got home lol

I don't have any belts though

he had a bunch of belts I forgot how high he got though. Once I was annoying the hell out of him so he tied me up to the kitchen table with the belts....but I'm sure that wouldn't have gone over well if his instructor heard about it.

and in highschool we had a martial arts expert come in my psychology class for a week and teach us all self defense techniques.

the defense against rape ones were fun....good thing the assistant principal didn't walk in that day

i tried to get my friend liz to teach me how to do karate and all that shiz. shes all fancy and knows how to do things of that sort.

all she told me how to do was spin a broom stick around and hit people with it.

Here's a little something I found about Craig and his karate skills. I highlighted the karate part.

With a ferocity not seen since such feuding musical brothers as Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis and Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks before them, Nicholls and Matthews often appear at war with each other.

Capitol Records pulled the plug on the group's 2002 U.S. tour after the Vines' singer and bassist traded punches on stage during a concert in Boston.

Nicholls, who is fond of smashing up the band's dressing rooms on tour, got the Vines booted from the set of "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." In a now infamous incident, he drunkenly destroyed Rosser's drum kit during rehearsals for his group's quickly aborted Leno performance. ("It was violent drum smashing," Matthews says now.)

Nichols also brought a Vines' performance on British TV to a quick halt, when he reportedly executed a karate-styled scissors kick on his bass-playing bandmate.

"It doesn't have much to do with creativity; it's more Craig being out of his head and being on tour for a long time," said Matthews, who put three years of medical school studies on hold when he joined the Sydney-based Vines.

But why fight in the first place?

"I don't know about the karate kick thing," said Matthews, who in a 2002 interview admitted he wanted to "punch" Nichols "in the head."

"The whole thing with the (Boston) fight on stage is, I guess, Craig was just swinging his guitar around too much – not at me – and I was like (telling him): 'Be a bit more careful.' He's kind of idiosyncratic and gets frustrated."

Asked how the two might peacefully resolve their differences, Matthews sighed.

"I don't know," he said. "We just started this tour and we're getting along fine. We'll see how things go. But when you're just fighting because you want to go home, it's not creative."
