Ive just voted for Maroon 5 but I know sometimes I hate some one more. They play Rock and now theyre very popular, and I myself used to like them much. But I dont undertand why now I hate them so f*cking!

Sister Bill
simple plan...they absolutely suck

Theur existence is absolutley worthless...they're not even hot, for that matter

Not like the rest of em are....they're just REALLY un-hot. haha
Freaky_freak
I don't like all of them but I don't mind Marron5 or Linkin Park. And you guys are gonna hate me for this but I don't mind Avril either. She's a poser and everything and pretty much boastful but I like her songs. You guys can hate me now. unsure.gif

I hate the others because hip hop and rap usually don't make sense and those pop stars are sluts. Britney, Christina, Lindsay, Hillary...damn dry.gif
eat grapes
lol i am like th exact opposite of u!
hate avril etc but i dont mind britney etc becasue they're just doin what they're doin and i leave them alone they leave me and my music alone.... unlike Miss Lavigne cutting into punk like she is

That's the most sensible thing I've seen in this thread, so far.

"God I hate Britney Spears so much...and Christina..I mean, they are always on the radio, and although I could turn it off or put a cd on that I know I would like..and even though I don't give two rat's tosses for pop music anyway.....um..well that's not the point is it?"

The White Stripes are mainstream too. Being mainstream doesn't automatically label you a sell-out. Besides, probably most bands you like and consider "indie" are probably mainstream themselves.

Well said.

I don't remember who it was that said something like "an artist sells out the day he signs a recording contract" but there's kind of something in that, in a really indirect way.

If Razorlight create the most uselessly dull and insipid run-of-the-mill indie singles which are limited to 3 copies per song and only available on the internet on uber-indieindieindieindieindieindie records (now defunct incidentally because it's SO indie and no-one heard of it) and Britney Spears comes out with a fantastically sounding song on Sony Records, I know what I'd prefer.

The worst thing is that all the really fanatical people start trashing you if you like a band with a close relaton to hip-hop or if you like a rap artist or anything mainstream. And then those same people claim to like indie bands, who just happen to be signed to Warner Bros, RCA etc. ------>contradictory
For example...
I like The Strokes. I don't claim them to be indie. They're perfectly well-known enough if you like rock music. Since most people where I live don't know who they are, they could seem indie to them. But they're not. I also like Pavement. Since they're signed to an indie label, I guess you could have the liberty to label them indie. But I really don't care for labels. Now, if someone comes along and accuses me of liking Eminem or Linkin Park or something, just cause they're a hardcore rock fan, they're just proving their stupidity. Mainstream music is extremely overrated, but that doesn't give you the right to label it as a whole, and overlook the bright spots...it's prejudice.

Well, yeah. I think that indie now now is more about a certain (albeit a vague) sound and so I'd have no problem with labelling The Strokes as "indie" really.

But I think The Strokes are just as 'mainstream' as Britney Spears or someone really, but no worse for it.

And it genuinely is about the quality of the music at the end of the day anyway, so..y'know.

Anyway, aren't The Strokes on Rough Trade? Isn't that one of the indie-est labels ever?

I think that is a subdivision of BMG. Last I checked BMG is who they were signed to.

EDIT: RCA/BMG
Thomhatesmusic
like def. the vines are not indie...
or Coldplay are shown on tv all the time are so def. not indie but that doesnt make them worse than anyone else, just more-known.

A question - since Bright Eyes is more known know, is it still Indie??

Yeah in Britain...here in the US they're on RCA. But you're right...well, a couple good bands are on rough trade. I don't mind a band going mainstream, as long as they maintain their music style and quality for the time. Otherwise...well, that's where they lose it and become more focused on crowd-pleasing than making satisfacory music, where people start referring to them as sell-outs. But as I said, I don't care for labels. Some people label a band indie, other people don't, I don't care. If someone thinks a band is indie, then so be it, not like it's going to affect anything.
It's just hypocrisy to see someone who labels themself as indie openly discredit mainstream bands, while most of what they listen to really is mainstream, but they're skull is too thick to realize it.

Ah right.

Years ago though, Rough Trade used to be a few of guys in an office with a firey passion for good music. Odd how its a subdivision of a major label now.

I still think that 'indie' is more about a sound than any agenda or which label a band is signed to. Even if that sound is quite far-reaching.

I mean, to say that Bright Eyes aren't indie anymore because more people have heard of them and like them is absurd. I say this presuming that the new album(s) aren't that radical a shift in musical direction of course.

Someone said that nothing is indie anymore, not even the indie labels, cause they're all owned by major labels anyway

But I agree with you. Indie is more associated with a certain sound than labels.

I think christina's voice sounds like a cat being raped and stepped on simultaneously

Nothing special....people make a fuss about it cause she's white. She has the voice of any black performer, it's actually not even up to that standard.

Music centered around the Christian denomination of religion.

There are many genres of Christian music: rock, rap, jazz (yes, JAZZ!!) laugh.gif

How can you justify sweepingly generalising a whole music genre there?

I'd have to assume that you've heard every country song ever then, or else you're just someone who easily discriminates.
