Well, yeah. I think that indie now now is more about a certain (albeit a vague) sound and so I'd have no problem with labelling The Strokes as "indie" really.
But I think The Strokes are just as 'mainstream' as Britney Spears or someone really, but no worse for it.
And it genuinely is about the quality of the music at the end of the day anyway, so..y'know.
Anyway, aren't The Strokes on Rough Trade? Isn't that one of the indie-est labels ever?
Yeah in Britain...here in the US they're on RCA. But you're right...well, a couple good bands are on rough trade. I don't mind a band going mainstream, as long as they maintain their music style and quality for the time. Otherwise...well, that's where they lose it and become more focused on crowd-pleasing than making satisfacory music, where people start referring to them as sell-outs. But as I said, I don't care for labels. Some people label a band indie, other people don't, I don't care. If someone thinks a band is indie, then so be it, not like it's going to affect anything.
It's just hypocrisy to see someone who labels themself as indie openly discredit mainstream bands, while most of what they listen to really is mainstream, but they're skull is too thick to realize it.
