just found this:

There was no doubt that this rare appearance by The Vines was going to generate buzz at South By Southwest.

The venue was an intimate upstairs cocktail bar which seemed an unusual but interesting setting for the sonic chaos that was about to ensue.

Since they left their label after the last album Vision Valley rumours have suggested both a return and a split so it was good to see the band regaining a lot of their earlier live energy to put on an incredible live show.

Only at SxSW could you see a band like The Vines perform at this venue, sofas surrounded the crowd, a few bottles of champagne were on ice as the large crowd tried to cram inside.

The band started with Highly Evolved, the sound was raw, heavy and filled the small venue with power to spare. The set was short, no more than 35 minutes, they ripped through 'Ride', 'Get Free' and a crowd pleasing version of 'Miss Jackson'.

Craig Nicholl's onstage energy was back to 'Highly Evolved' levels and tonight's show was an exciting indication that we may hear plenty more from The Vines in 2008.

Courtesy of NME, seems like a pretty great show, and we get more song names

The Vines rocked their second SXSW show of the week at Pangea in the early hours of this morning (March 15), playing old hits and new tracks from their long-awaited fourth album.

The Australian four-piece proved why they were so highly hyped in their heyday by performing eardrum-bursting anthem after anthem.

Lead singer Craig Nicholls looked happy and well, and his voice seemed as impressive as it was in the band's early years.

Taking to the stage at 12.15am (CMT), defying the smoking ban throughout the set, Nicholls, wearing a denim jacket and clutching his guitar, howled through the 50-minute set.

Grabbing at his clothes and making hand gestures, Nicholls was ever the enigmatic front man and chatty, too.

In between songs the singer told the crowd how brilliant it felt to be performing live again, saying: "It's great to be back".

In reference to the illness which halted the band's rise earlier in their career, he added: "Thanks everyone for supporting us through all the shit".

Before playing their anthem 'Get Free', Nicholls said: "I love life and I love all the people in it".

The Vines played:

'Jamola'
'Highly Evolved'
'Vision Valley'
'Ride'
'Get Out'
'True Is The Night'
'Outtathaway'
'Get Free'
'Miss Jackson'
'Fuck The World'

So now we've got Get Out, True Is the Night, Jamola, Merry Go Round and Autumn Shade III? Sounds quite promising. I wonder which one is going to be the first single.

Heh, I immediately thought of Outtathaway! when I saw the title.

I thought they did a typo. tongue.gif Now I think it's gonna sound like a mix between Get Free and Outtathaway, but watch it be completely different. rolleyes.gif

it had better be a ballad.

They should do a double album: 1/2 of ballads and 1/2 of everything else.

amusing little tale:...

The showcase whiplashed into a set by The Vines, and I found out that even at a place like Pangaea, there’s still plenty of Austin’s weirdness to be had. Lead singer Craig Nicholls’s battle with Asperger’s Syndrome had all but ensured that the curtain had fallen on the band and he’s all-too-aware of the group’s status in the states, at one point saying “We’re gonna do a song off our last album. I don’t know if it was released here.” But their triumphant performance at SXSW – closed out by a blistering three-song wave of “Get Free” “Fuck the World” and a cover of Outkast’s “Miss Jackson” – will likely re-launch its career here after the Australian group spent the last year at festival appearances throughout Europe.

As they performed, I sat perched on the DJ booth, expecting some bouncer would pull my ass off it at any moment, though no one ever did. Adding to the chaos of The Vines’ set was the drunk prankster sitting next to me who took it upon himself to man the lighting board, plunging most of the room into darkness during a ballad, save for green spotlights over The Vines, then throwing red and blue disco lights throughout the space for their thrashier numbers. A guy in a dark suit and earpiece came over and I figured we were out the door, but he only asked the erstwhile lighting designer if he knew what he was doing, before giving him some pointers on the setup and leaving him to his work.

mary_jane83
yeah, that would actually work but what's with the ola then? he wanted it to sound cooler? laugh.gif
MisplacedKeys
Yeah, I can just imagine Craig going "hey guys, let's make a song about /jam/. But we can't call it jam, that's too obvious. Let's, like, add, like, ola at the end." Still, it could be just a typo. Or it could be a mix between jam and cola, because he really loves both. ...I guess.
ridexwithxme
haha jam! i didn't think of that!
I just thought of.....jamola...I don't know! It sounds like something south african biggrin.gif

Well, he never specifically said anything about his love for jam, at least not to my knowledge, but he kinda looks like a jam person. Or at least a vegemite fan, which is close enough.

I googled 'Jambola' ... it's similar sounding..

1. Jambola
"An evil user, materialistic, wannabe, drug using, relationship breaker."

MAYBE it's a tribute to one of his favorite songs by The Kinks, 'cause you know, Jamola rhymes with Lola. And the Jam is just for...maybe the song jams. Ha HA! cool.gif

" To be honest, I didn't even know the Vines were still around. Coincidently, after their set I was left wishing that they really were gone. I mean, when you're playing at SXSW I think there are a couple of things that you don't do. One is that you don't beg for a record label, and the other is that you don't specifically note that you're only interesting in "money and girls." Also, it may be an OK idea to not make it abundantly clear that you're totally washed up.

On a related side note, I was more than a little surprised at how many morons were in attendance to see Craig and Co. The band hasn't had a memorable song in an eternity, yet there were all these people there with their fists in the air. Strange, and maybe a little retarded."source

"As comfortable as it was to plant myself at Stubb's all day, there was one band worth trekking across town for, out of curiosity alone. When I saw the Vines on this year's SXSW schedule, I wondered if it was even the same Vines from the garage-rock explosion of the early 2000s. After singer Craig Nicholls basically went bat-sh-- crazy a few years back, I'd given up ever seeing the Vines again.

But they are back, and Nicholls is still as fascinating a frontman as they come. Entertaining a yuppy (bottle service all around!) crowd at Pangea, Nicholls took the stage with a cigarette dangling from his lips, his hair covering his eyes and his jean jacket three sizes too small and tore into a set that featured new material along with some Vines favorites."

did he say all those stuff? huh.gif i'm sure it was only like a joke or something.
i just find that review particulary nasty and impolite. judging a band about what the lead singer says, that's purely pathetic if you want my opinion.

Well that "retarded" part is just nasty.
And that is just an example how someone who thinks that his or hers opinion has high importance writes a review.

I don't mind when someone don't like a band I like and when the review or comment isn't complementary but this isn't professional it is jut slagging.
At least that's how I see it.

Ewwww what a bitch, what a bitch! I don't trust her review because she obviously couldn't take a joke and seems too uptight to even get Craig's humor. Plus, she didn't talk about the music or how they played at all, just about their status. Wtf? She took some great pictures though. laugh.gif
