Ok, I've been hearing Vertigo by U2 alot (ipod Ad), And I've realised;
The 'Main Riff' Bit sounds like that bit from Get Free (Come Here Come Here Come Here, I'll take your photo for ya) and It's making my think U2 have been going around stealing peoples music. Anyone else notice this?
little_washu712
Oh dear yes. It's so obvious too. dry.gif

Download Dirty Boots from Sonic Youth, the whole song is actually Vertigo, you'll be shocked.

Yep, someone brought this up in the old forum. There's a rumor that U2 steals other bands' songs. I brought that up with my English teacher (We're pretty close since she's young) But turns out she's a U2 fan. Goodbye A and hello C laugh.gif
But it's been worse. You should've seen the time I told her that Courtney Love is Evil. I still like her though. My teacher, not Courtney Love just so you know. laugh.gif

Ya, and most people either totally disagreed or saw it really well, personally I really cant tell
Maxwell Demon
yeah well I hear it now

theres just like one small change in it, but its extremely similar
Helter Skelter
it is possible....
crash
I totally agree about U2-I cant not hear get free when i hear vertigo-and then there is the ipod connection as well-! smile.gif
How far did get free get in the charts worldwide ?
Asparagus Sin Drum
A bit of this conversation happened in the Top Ten Songs thread. I still stand by my thought that Get Free is inferior to Vertigo though, the way in which the guitar line and the vocals work together is a brilliant piece of song-writing. It's more uplifting than The Vines track.
Asparagus Sin Drum
Oh,and, the bit in Vertigo where Bono sings "Is that you give me something I can feel/You're teaching me ...aaahhh" at the end is fucking superb since you assume that when he sings "feel" it'll be stretched out like it usually is in the song, but he turns it on its head and uses that word to start the next line of the song which is actually an unheard part of the song anyway. It's a fucking brilliant piece of songwriting and..really surpasses anything The Vines have done.

Seriously. It happens at 2:37 in the song. Have a listen. Brilliant.

And the same with "how to kneel"
La Merde
I've grown to not really care about either song, although I did enjoy both a lot way back when. It is true that vertigo sounds similar in the chorus section (?) to get free's. But then again, get free is much more primative to vertigo's lyrics. done.
Maxwell Demon
I really liked vertigo for a while

but I hear it all the damn time and I'm getting sick of it

I do agree it is a very good song though
Freaky_freak
Speaking of songs that are sounding alike. I realized a few minutes ago that the last part of Mary Jane(The Piano and guitar and no lyrics part) sounds like that soundtrack of Peter Pan by Coldplay. But only a bit. laugh.gif

I've had it on repeat all night and am still not sick of it

For some reason though, I can't appreciate the song with the video of it, I don't know why. See also: Fell In Love With A Girl.

The video's pretty uplifting. What about Fell In Love With A Girl?

Fell in Love With a GIrl by the White Stripes? Hey did you guys know that Joss Stone had a version of that? tongue.gif

Oh yes, it' s a great video. Nicely creative. Just after seeing it a couple of times I get a bit annoyed as I don't think it suits the song that well. It's a very short and basic song and I always envisaged it being accompanied by a simplistic video of them in a white room or something just playing the track.

Oh, I agree, I agree.

Vertigo is a fantastic song.

I have a live performance of it recorded from some late night TV show (can't remember which). It was really, really good.

EDIT: Oh, and I also discovered that my father has been a fan of U2 ever since they first started. The first time he saw them in concert was in some small, cruddy venue when they were a really unknown band. I thought that was interesting.

I dunno...but I like U2 anyways... blink.gif

Come to think of it, when I said it was uplifting I was talking about the MTV live performance thingy. There's probably another video. Is there? I have no idea cause this is the only one I've watched. I'm talking about the one in San Francisco, in front of the bridge. I didn't see the video anywhere else, if there is another one, cause I'm stuck with stupid MTV. What's it like?
Luv.

Actually....I think he needs a new SPANISH teacher...or perhaps both..
Go2schoolNAKED
as for the reason he goes 1, 2, 3, 14...I think it's because How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is their 14th album...and also it fits with the messed up concept of vertigo...but i think its funny, becasue to me, instead of saying uno, it sounde like hes saying "onze" (french for 11) but that really wouldn't make sense...

and speaking of some similarities...does the beginning of "In The Jungle" remind anyone here of "Dont Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult? Don't get my wrong, I love the song and I still love The Vines, but there's no denying its simmilar.
Helter Skelter
yeah...surprisingly it does...hmmmmm

I suggested that to my friends at school and we are always talking about it, the first time I heard vertigo I was like o.k,you've just fucking ripped off get free, don't get me wrong I have always respected u2 for making good music but that just takes the fucking biscuit.
Colin_is_a_Phillover
I don't want to talk about that. There are U2 and the Vines. I love the Vines and I like U2, but I don't want to compare them. The same's with the Vines and Nirvana. rolleyes.gif

Well, in all fairness, The Vines aren't exactly the least derirative band around though, are they?
Asparagus Sin Drum
It'd just been pointed out to me that the melody of Vertigo sounds like You Keep Me Hanging On by the Supremes. Which it does too. No wonder I liked that song so much.

Get Free + Dirty Boots + You keep me haning on= Vertigo
HighlyEvolved666
I was in my room writing up myself a new song and my brother was watching TV when I heard "Get Free" I ran in there thinking it was the video or something on the Vines, but it was an iPod commericial... and U2. I was like, "I thought this was the Vines..." So, yeah, I think U2 stole it. My stupid twin sister, Vanessa, tried to make it seem as if the Vines stole it, and I was like, "That came out like 3 years ago, dumb-ass!" So she just told me it sounded nothing like it. They should charge u2 for that...

ive been saying the same thing. the only difference is in keyu and the fact that craig carries it up a half step then down, U2s man jus goes down. Also, if i believe correctly, vertigo is in E

The other difference is that U2 are shit and The Vines arent, The Whole band seems soo up themselves and thinks that they're living legends, I for one don't. Their music getting crapper and everyone thinks they're so much better !

Meh........ U2 My arse!
My Minds Computer
definatley true ive played both songs on guitar same riffs but down an octave and the timing is changed a bit..........
