alright only highly evolved went gold in the states. anybody know why?

Was it because of the nirvana comparison?

fucking states did that last time with SILVERCHAIR.

Or were they just wanting to go back underground or whatever?
ohwellwhatevernevermind
um strange this topic keeps disappearing and reappearing ?

Highly Evolved was, apart from being an amazing album, extremely wisely promoted, if I may put it that way. And it was accompanied with a massive tour.
Around Winning Days, Craig was becoming increasingly erratic, and media chose to focus on that rather than the music. The album got some pretty harsh reviews and all the hype was starting to get old. They only toured for about two months and then the whole Triple M assault thing happened, which didn't exactly help with anything.
Vision Valley wasn't promoted that much, there was very limited touring and everyone thought they had broken up, I guess.

Going gold doesn't mean that much, I think. I mean, it's of course great and splendid and earns them money, but that isn't everything. I once read this on a website about them: 'Anyone can sell a million copies of a record; it takes someone special to make a record that people will want to hear a million times.' And that's what The Vines are to me. People that make albums that I want to listen to a million times and then some more. Not a band I would listen to because they sold a certain amount of records.

Exactly, I'm on you with this one. hug.gif Besides, some people might want them to be the biggest thing in the world again, and I know they deserve it as their music truly is the most amazing thing. But I'm afraid of the effects on Craig of going gold again, all I want is that he stays happy doing whatever he likes and generating great music. That's all. happy.gif

I bet the nirvana comparison didn't help either but makes me wonder have they ever do covers of nirvana live?
Vine Freak
Not that I know of.

They started off by playing a lot of Nirvana covers, but Craig started writing his own songs pretty soon, so I don't think any of the covers were recorded and they stopped playing them even before they got signed. They rather focused on their own tunes, I guess. It would be interesting to hear one of those covers, maybe Craig's got a home-recorded tape or a couple still lying around somewhere.
Vine Freak
Oooh, maybe I should raid Craig's house to find one biggrin.gif

I don't think that's it! The States are too obseeseed with pop stars and rap stars, that there's just no room for rock anymore!

the majority...but not everyone. In fact, indie music is quite recognized here, everyone knows pop music is just commercial crap.

oh and another thing, yea going gold or anything like that isn't important, but Highly evolved was THE best vines album, by far, and winning days was okay...the demos were much more interesting and had better lyrics, I have nothing good to say about vision valley, and i dont want you people killing me...

I seriously don't get why everyone dislikes VV so much, it has some amazing songs on it. huh.gif
But anyway, I'm with ya on the demo thing. Their songs have always sounded better as demos than finished, polished album versions to me. What Craig can do with his voice and overlaying and echoing is simply amazing, I don't understand why they didn't want to keep that unique feel on the records and went for (seemingly) simpler, more ... I dunno, commercial? sound. I wish they just stopped using producers altogether, if all they do is harm/destroy the atmosphere of the song (not that I would know anything about producing anyway so please don't kill me, Mr Schnapf tongue.gif )
ohwellwhatevernevermind
yeah visison valley is awesome
Vine Freak
VV is fantastic. Spaceship is awesome.
she's in the melting pot
^Agree.Spaceship is the best song on the album. It was my least played for ages and now i cant get enough of that song.

I think i actually like VV more than i like winningdays now, but i love em all they are like my babies smile.gif I'd be lost without my vines cds .

^Agree on the demos too they always sound fucking amazing, craig voice is so magical.
