I've been thinking... Craig has got to be the most talented, brilliant songwriters in the world (and hottest ). He has an interesting way of writing as well. But I know it must pass through some of your minds while listening to their CD's. WHAT THE FUCK IS HE TALKING ABOUT. I mean, I really have to dig in to the song to find out something. But does anyone truely know what his songs are about?

If anyone of you know, or have an idea about what he means in his awesome songs, I'd like for you to either do like a translation type thingy or just a brief description of each song if possible... I already know what Mary Jane is about though.

I sometimes seem to catch like a phrase I finally get. (Or I think I do... well at least it kind of makes sense to me then)

Well, I doubt that we'd ever figure out what Craig means in the songs. He's the only one who can truly understand them. He wrote them.

MAybe the songs were just meant to speak to us differently. Like it has a different message for every person who hears it. And if all you can think of is 'what the fuck?' then maybe you just have to listen harder.

Take for example the song Winning days. Haven't you noticed that almost everyone in this forum loves it? It's not that punk but we all probably relate to it in some way. I read somewhere that it's about childhood innocence, and Craig said it was about him wanting to be a baby again so he could sleep all day. But the thing is, the song makes us happy------>

Mary Jane? Some of us say it's a girl. Some says it's a drug.

I know he has commented on some of the songs and what they mean a few times, but Craig has never really gone in detail.

One thing I remember him saying was that the songs don't have a meaning and if they did that would be boring, they are a feeling or trip that you take. Or something like that...

I never really thought about it. I really don't care what he meant. I don't know. It's just like, I rather enjoy the music than analyze it and try to figure out what Craig is really like through them.

But, if i can find the article, if you haven't already seen it, where he explains a little about each song, then I'll post it or the link for you.

Because I love his way of writing. Even though I don't know what he's talking about, it's written in a way that you don't really have to know what they mean. He is brilliant because I guess he doesn't really write the songs for us to know what they mean or maybe he didn't make them with a meaning to them really. Everyone has a different idea about what every song means. It's interesting to know why a song was written yet the important thing is, I think, to relate to a song, to feel something particular when you hear it... I think that's what art does.. to me at least. When I hear Get Free for instance I get angry with anything or anyone that restrains me... and that might be my parents or some political situation... One day I read Craig had written it for his ex girlfriend. It makes sense but the thing is I still get angry when I hear the song and I really enjoy it!

In the song he's very emotional and says "She never loved me, why should anyone?" Craig also says that he'll take her photo for her, drive her around the corner but he tells her in the song to move out of California because he's so distraught that he's afraid of what he might do to her.

i read an interview with craig and patrick. they were saying all the meanings of the songs in 'winning days', but i fucking forgot where i found the site. i remember that 'sunchild' is about being optimistic and craig was wondering how people could always look on the brightside coz for him, it' so hard to always be happy no matter how bad things go or something like that...winning days was about how he wishes he was a child again. coz that was the times when you could get what you wanted and you can always get away with things. 'ride' doesnt mean anything..the phrase 'ride with me' means to just 'trip out and get into it' as craig said. and 'rainfall is just about nature and shit like that. 'fuck the world'..well, the name pretty much explains it.

hey, I think craig has more of a passion thena talent, sure he is talented but hes also very into making music, he has a passion for it and thats why he writes such great songs, i know this hardly has anything to do with the meanings behind songs. but yeah I saw someone post something about popping ur winning days cd in ur comp and having the meanings on thats special player. it does but it doesnt work for some people so try it but if it doesnt work ummm ask people who have it.

i've popped the cd into my player when i first got 'winning days' and it just played the album like it would do in a cd player...there werent any special features or anything.

It's only on the US version.

This is an alternate site that you could go for to find the song meanings for Winning Days and Highly Evolved.
It isn't the same as the XFM site one, they must have done a different interview which asked the same question (about giving a brief meaning/description of the songs on the albums) In the Highly Evolved song meanings page, it also has the site owners' interpretation of the songs as well. It's a pretty well made site.. If you press on the menus eg. 'Media' it changes colours (I'm easily amused )
