The Vines have signed a new recording deal with Ivy League Records and are set to begin recording their fourth album with producer Rob Schnapf in Los Angeles in mid November.

Ivy League are extremely proud to be the new home for one of the most exciting and creatively gifted bands to emerge from Australia in the past decade. The new partnership continues a long-running association and friendship between the band and Ivy League, and both parties are extremely excited about what the future holds for the group who have had their share of well documented highs and lows over their 5 year recording career.

Emerging with a bang in 2002, The Vines were at the very forefront of an exciting new rock movement around the world along with contemporaries The Strokes, The Hives and The White Stripes. Their debut album 'Highly Evolved', sold more than 1.5 million copies. Their second album 'Winning Days' was a less happy time for the band in spite of its quality when singer Craig Nicholls’ increasingly erratic behaviour led to a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome (a high functioning form of autism) and an extended hiatus as Nicholls learnt to deal with his condition. 'Vision Valley' saw the band re-emerge with a still fragile yet unshakably gifted Nicholls starting afresh. His gradual rehabilitation saw the band re-emerge on to the live stage again with a series of outstanding festival performances in Australia and the UK in 2006 including Big Day Out, Reading and Leeds. 2007 has been spent writing and rehearsing songs for what promises to be an amazing fourth album.

“We're really excited to be with Ivy League,” says Craig Nicholls of the band's new label. “We are already friends, and they love music as much as we do. We really want to make an amazing album and can't wait to start recording. We're ready. REALLY ready, and we're going to being able to tour more this time as well."

“To say that we are huge Vines fans would be putting it mildly,” says Andy Kelly from Ivy League. “They are one of our favourite bands of all time, so getting the opportunity to put their albums out is incredibly exciting. We love them as people and as a band, and can’t wait to hear the new songs, and can’t wait for everyone else to hear them.”

The Vines join fellow ARIA Award winners Josh Pyke and Youth Group on the Ivy League roster, as well as the likes of Red Riders, The Silents, Bridezilla and The Mess Hall to make up one of the most exciting line-ups in the country. Ivy League are currently celebrating their tenth anniversary and couldn’t have hoped for a better way to celebrate than with the addition of such an important band to their roster.

The Vines will be performing a special live set this Friday 2 Nov at Sydney’s Metro Theatre as part of Ivy League’s Ten Year Anniversary concert.

Stand by for a new Vines album and more of their extraordinary live shows around the world in 2008.

When I questioned manager Andy Kelly about The Vines returning to NYC he said, "Rest assured they will finally get back there to play New York in 2008 at least -- and at last."

hail.gif Excellent news! Esp. the bit about starting recording in November. yahoo.gif

And the bit about touring more.

Let's just hope Ivy League is able to get them back on the top of the world - the position that they deserve.

Other than that, I'm overwhelmed and have got nothing else to say, except a series of happy sounds, which don't look that good when written down, so I'll stop right here and jump up and down with excitement a bit more. biggrin.gif

And that's exactly why we need a fan section carefully supervising everything they do there in the studio. shifty.gif The section consisting of me as a representative of general public and a couple of people that actually know a thing or two about music. tongue.gif Who's for it? tongue.gif

YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY!!! *about to bust into tears*

worst idea ever: you know you'll like pretty much everything they do. I'm seriously worried about Rob Schnapf.... I wish we had some sort of promise from him that he isn't going to go over do things again. I'd be happy if that happened. It needs to be even more stripped down than Highly Evolved.

I don't see anything particularly bad about liking everything they do. tongue.gif

But yeah, I agree about the rawness part, they should keep it natural and not produce it in such an 'american', polished way. I think the band have a more distinct idea of how they should sound, though, and I hope they won't give in and go along with everything Schnapf pulls out of the hat.

I hear you Tyler but you have to realize that the band are responsible for the finished product as well. If they didn't approve of Schnapf they wouldn't use him so much. Craig is a huge admirer of his work.

I think we're all a bit biased anyway because of the demos. At least album four will have never heard before songs. It's really exciting. Admit it. You're excited. wink.gif

There's an article in today's Sydney Morning Herald about Ivy League, in which Hamish comments on the label.
I'm just posting the Vines-related parts, the whole article is available here and you should all read it because it's very entertaining and you won't get the sideburn joke unless you read it.
QUOTE
Kelly elaborates: "Just before the Vines [signed] I had gone back working part time, after Goldmans shut, and we had no money. We came very close to going bankrupt."

Cassell: "I remember I got married in January 2000. The day before we got married we found out that these other bookers had moved in on our territory [Goldmans] while we were down in country Victoria for the wedding. I remember having an informal agreement with my wife, now that I had absolutely no money, if things don't improve by October then it's time to kick it in and get a real job. We came across the Vines in April-May and looking back it was just blind faith. October rolls around and we weren't any better financially, we were actually worse because we were fighting a lawsuit against Newtown RSL, but we had this ridiculous faith in this band."

QUOTE
The Vines's Hamish Rosser sees less gamble on the band's side of the equation. It's the personal touch that always mattered.

"Andy Kelly would have to be one of the funniest men on the planet," he says. "And he would dive in front of a speeding train to save the Vines. Until recently we had a deal with Capitol in the US and I never had any personal connection with any of the people who worked at Capitol. Whereas here, the people are here because they love music not because they have a business major. They stood by us when the Vines hit a real low point when other managers would have walked away."

And the sideburns?

"It's in the contract, actually. Shave the sideburns off and the management deal is over."

EDIT: Oh yeah, there's a picture in the article as well, seems to be another take of the Ivy League's 10 Years in Trenches gig promo picture.

course i am excited, and I know this is going to be an incredible album no matter what, I guess I just hoped for some different producers (the two I named earlier in particular). I'm fucking excited, course I am. I just want them to be on top of the world again and I don't entirely trust rob schnapf. We know the band have realised that overdubbing to that extent is a big no no, and hopefully they'll keep it to a minimum this time. Someone should repost that oliffe article about the highly evolved sessions... there was something in there which concerned me too I think... anyway end rant, I'm sure it'll be awesome. i can't wait to hear how it goes. Any idea how long they plan to be in the studio for?

Anything. A simple hello, a wave to the camera, a smile, even. Doesn't have to be a full report about their every move (although I wouldn't mind that at all). The suspension is killing me! Are they in LA yet? When do they start recording? Are they eating well? unsure.gif

LOL...I'm not trying to be. If it's confirmed I'll announce it on the forum but so far I haven't heard anything more. It would be great if they'd release it with the new cd.

A dvd? I wonder what the content of it would be. Maybe some kind of an overview of how they develop their music???
Hehe, I just came upon something concerning the new album; the cover. I wonder how it will look like, I have always liked their covers (in musical and artistic terms, lol) =P

I was thinking about that yesterday- the exact opposite of vision valley- white background and black print.
