The Vines cover The Veronicas as part of a tribute to female artists
Occasional rock outfit The Vines have covered the track 4EVA by talentless pop darlings The Veronicas as part of a new compilation album called No Man's Woman.
The album features several male artists, such as Josh Pyke, Expatriate, Paul Kelly, Bob Evans and Powderfinger, covering classic female tracks by Bjork, PJ Harvey, Sinead O'Connor, Portishead and .. the Australian pop twinz.
Suprisingly, The Vines' spaced-out take on the pop-shit-tastic track is fairly entertaining - somewhat reminiscent of a few years back when they made Outkast's Miss Jackson sound like a drugged-out lullaby.
Anyways, judge for yourself...
No Man's Woman is in stores from this Saturday, October 20.

Tribute albums generally break down into two categories: covers that tell you something about the subject and covers that tell you something about the performer. No Man's Woman, a collection of Australian male voices interpreting songs made famous by women, is no different. In terms of self-reflection, Powderfinger manage to find the epic in Portishead's Glory Box, the Vines reduce the Veronicas' 4Ever into a droning ganja groove, and Josh Pyke manages to remove the magic from Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights. So far, so so. But there are some genuine reinventions. Dan Kelly adds years, and what sounds like a ukulele, to Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U, giving it a tropical innocence far removed from the original's pain, while the up-and-coming Whitley strips back Bjork's Hyperballad, making it a solemn study of everyday hope and despair. It's noticeable that few of those involved have opted to augment their choice - it's either dutiful or reduced for introspection. Existing outside such concerns is the closing track, where Tex Perkins struts and snarls through a garage jam of Helen Reddy's I Am Woman. It's beyond classification and thankfully so.
"droning ganja groove" ???

Tex Perkins sings “I am Woman” on No Man’s Woman

Other worthy efforts include Bob Evans’s interpretation of Lucinda Williams’s “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” and The Vines doing “4Ever” by The Veronicas.
However, if The Vines are being sarcastic when they proclaim on the CD cover; “We think this is a great song and The Veronicas make great albums. We’re lucky to have them”, they’re mocking the reason for No Man’s Woman existence.

The Vines Do The Veronicas 25Sep07
So far, 2007 has been a relatively quiet year for Sydney rockers, The Vines. Besides a slot on last summer’s Big Day Out circuit and an appearance at the Great Escape festival earlier in the year, the normally loud lads have hardly made a peep - but all of that is soon to change.
Vines-fever officially will begin-again on October 20, with the release of the upcoming compilation album No Man’s Woman - A Tribute To Women In Voice. An album of songs performed by Australian male vocalists, originally made famous by women, across the history of music - or so the press release would have me think - The Vines will offer up their version of The Veronicas’ shitfest “4ever”, alongside the likes of Tex Perkins, Whitley and Paul Kelly.
The band will then play as part of Ivy League’s 10th Birthday celebrations at the Metro Theatre on November 2nd, before wrapping up work on their next untitled album, which the little internet bird keeps telling me will be released “before the end of the year”.

Surprise ! The Vines, of all bands, has done a cover of The Veronicas' hit '4Ever', for a compilation released in Australia called No Man's Woman, in which male artists cover women's songs. And it is very good, a bit psychedelic, but the harmonies are sweet. By the way, The Veronicas' new single 'Hook Me Up' is one electro corker. Nice change in the twins' direction...
