I kind of like this song in the video below because it's very spacey (and they often opened for Swervedriver) but then I learned they were an influential early emo band. Crap, I'm halfway to listening to Dashboard Confessional. Tell me if you like them.

seems more grungy to me... i like the lyrics
electricvogue

yeah i dig the lyrics too even though they are repetitive and cryptic: she thinks she missed the train to mars, she out back counting stars...i thought she'd be there holding daisies, she always waits for me"

yes, it sounds much more grunge to my ears as well.

I think it's kind of important to note that "emo" originally meant a whole different thing than it means today, as someone said in the comments for the video; emo was first used as a term to describe bands from the Washington DC area that used a lot of theatrics and/or emotion in punk and grunge; Jimmy Eat World originally used such tactics, and people associated JimmyEW with "emo". However, as time went on, Jimmy Eat World hardly had any of the said influences, and people were still simply defining emo as "like Jimmy Eat World", lo and behold, it's now used by stupid bands who don't know what the hell they're talking about.

Yeah, Ian McKay of the hardcore band Minor Threat formed Embrace which is arguably the first emo band. Then followed: Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, Fugazi and the likes. By the 90's Sunny Day Real estate and Hum seemed to be much more rooted in alternative and the grunge scene (sound wise at least).

Anyway, it's all crap to me. Aside from the song I posted.

I don't see why it matters, if you like the music.

Yeah, ditto, who cares, why do you worry? I could care less what genre it is, If I like it, i'll listen to it. anmd that song is alright, its very Smashing Pumpkins like to me....just without the signature Billy voice.
