The heat didn't seem to concern Craig Nicholls, frontman for Sydney's resurgent rockers The Vines. Nicholls, who suffers from Asperger's syndrome, appears to be coping with his illness and the band received a huge ovation after their 45-minute onslaught.

hey. so i saw the vines yesterday, they were very, very good! though the mosh made it hard to enjoy them. i had to get out before i pretty much got killed. from what i remember, they played dope train, animal machine, ride, get free, ms. jackson, fuk yeah, gross out, vision valley, winning days. not in that order. and then fuck the world last of course.. i thought the mosh would let up a little during vision valley, but it didnt so i had to get out, haha. brad is so sexy!? my god! oh and then later on that night when muse was playing, craig and ryan were standing at the side of the stage. craig was clapping his hands and doing hand movements, full getting into it, and ryan was with his girlfriend and this other hot chick.. then there were these other girls with them, whoever they were. but yeah.. thats about it

yeah, i think it was his girlfriend.. they looked like they were holding hands and what not. muse were amazing. and craig was really reserved when he was playing. he was great though, cause he had control of his voice, but he didn't move around much and in between songs he would just comment on how 'fucking hot' it was. at the end he sort of just swung his guitar into the drumkit and walked off, hah. i had to get crowd surfed out.

I just got back to Sydney from Brisbane, and oh my goodness. The Vines were awesome! They even had a new song... well a cover. It's by Outkast - "So Fresh So Clean" . It was absolutely fantastic - I've never gone to a Vines concert where I haven't known all the words to every song already... well until Sunday night . I recorded the song on video and I'm uploading it as I type . You're all gonna love it .

But yeah, they played really well and Craig's voice was great, Brad even moved around a bit! Not that he needs to move, he can just stand there and look sexy with his bass . I've got heaps of pics which I will upload very soon .
There were quite a few peeps walking around in Vines shirts I noticed, and I overheard two girls leaving the Muse mosh debating whether The Vines or Muse were the best act of the day . I was also talking to some people on the train on the way there, I told them to check out The Vines, they did and they messaged me later in the day saying they were surprised at how good they were . Very nice to hear .

Ha, and some poor guy next to me dislocated his elbow by being a little too over zealous in his attempts to grab the drumstick thrown out by the band before The Vines. It sounded, and looked very painful. Ha, but in true BDO spirit he was still clutching the drumstick in his good hand as he was being lead away by the ambulance officers .
Anyway.. I'll get onto uploading those pics now .

Edit: Oh and Fee - Brad ditched the sunnies after the second song . I like them though... I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree .

I love all those pictures. My inner teenybopper is dying! They're all so hot. I feel like way too much of a fangirl right now.

It was really easy to get to the front... then again I was there from the beginning of the day . I could have actually waited until just before Minus Life came on (they were the act before The Vines) and would have been able to get a good spot on the barrier. That was mainly because all the bands until The Vines came on were metal bands. So the metal heads all left after Trivium. That mosh was completely insane. I've never been so crushed in a moshpit before. And that is saying something. I have bruises up my arms, my legs - even on my back. All from that one mosh. The guy next to me started vomiting profusely just after the set because of the heat and the crush. At one point I thought I was gonna faint because I could hardly breathe, but then I got shoved along the barrier a bit and that let up some of the pressure. I was the only girl left on the barrier that I could see, the rest were all big guys with long hair wearing all black. They were really sweaty and gross so I was drenched with other peoples sweat by the end of it. Ick. Just before Trivium came on, this guy next to me said to the guy behind me "you just there to protect the girls?" in a sarcastic voice, and the big guy behind me said "sure" then laughed and said "first chance I get and they're gonna be annihilated" . And true to his word the other girl next to me had to be pulled out and I'd say half the bruises on the left hand side of my body are from that jerk elbowing me and crushing me so he could get his barrier spot. Not that he needed it, he was really tall and could see over me just fine as it was. Dickhead . If only it had been him who had dislocated his elbow and not the guy on the other side of me.
The Vines cowd was no where near as rough. They were really into it, but the crush wasn't crazy and people weren't thrashing around as violently. Compared to homebake, it was a little less squished... but I might have just thought that because I was comparing it to Trivium - compared to that the crowd in The Vines set was roomy . There were about the same number of crowd surfers, and the crowd were all singing along to the lyrics . There was a really good vibe during The Vines, everyone really loved it and let the guys know . Awww .

That was one hell of a show. I had my camera but I didn't get any photo's, I was like second row in the centre and everyone was going pretty mental and I couldn't hold my camera still for long enough to get a photo, except for during the slow songs, but I didn't feel like expelling the effort required to hold my arm in the air. My sister got some photo's from the back of the tent which I can post some time if anyone's interested. Craig is one hell of a performer.

As for the new cover, the song seemed familiar but I couldn't remember from where I'd heard it. But if it was a popular Outkast song then I probably heard it on the radio or something. Sounded good though.

I know! Seriously. What's with all the metal acts and then following up with The Vines? A totally different genre? It makes no sense at all. Crazy people. I hate metal head crowds.

And uh... hate to disappoint you, but if you get there before Trivium, you will be trampled anyway. I'm gonna go on the barrier again before Trivium... I know I shouldn't. I really don't want to be crushed like that again. It was so painful. But then I'm paranoid I won't get a barrier spot for The Vines...

Jeez. The things I put myself through for those boys *sigh* . Ahh, but the music makes it worth it a hundred times over .

i knew we could count on our allie to come back with pics, vid and the full scoop!! aww, it sounds like you had the bestest time, and i swear, best of all is to keep hearing what a great reception they're getting from the crowds. after all they've been thru and as long as they've been away from the stage, it warms my heart to hear they're playing better than they ever have!

i'm not a big fan of that outkast song - it's just kinda 'meh' - but as with 'ms. jackson' the vines take it and make it their own.

as for the setlist, annie said they did 'in the jungle' in NZ but not 'spaceship' - cos she kept yelling for it - so did they switch that up, allie?

The Vines played In The Jungle at Goldy but no Spaceship. From memory the set list went as follows, in no particular order. (except Dope Train opened and FTW closed)

Oh and Channel V were recording a couple of songs so hopefully we'll see them when they air the Big Day In (I will record, rip and share).

Craig looks really good lately. I think he's lost some weight. And he should wear green more. He's all sweaty and the sweat looks all shiny because of the lights. He looks like he'd been oiled up. Like those bodybuilders, I mean. Btw, I didn't know there were people with transparent heads. Look at the bloke's head in the right lower corner, you can see right through it.

Mmmm. Ryan! You can see sweat on his neck in the first pic. He looks like he's biting his lip in the second one. And he looks absolutely gorgeous (no real surprise there). I'm kind of disappointed he didn't wear his necklace he had worn in NZ. I started to think Craig'd given it to him and you know ... I really love his shiny beautiful hair. It falls really nicely on his face, it looks really ... nice. I'd run my fingers through it. Numerous times. I really like that he wears tight jeans a lot now. For obvious reasons. I guess we'll be seeing that shirt quite a lot now, we all know how he loves to wear the same piece of clothing until it rots and falls off him. I sure hope it shrinks or that he tears it in the front, because that shirt is totally cock-blocking. And he buttoned it up! He had TWO unbuttoned buttons in NZ and he only has ONE now! Not good, not good at all. I want to see his manly chest. Oh, that reminded me, did he wear those manly shoes of his? You know, the ones with the buckles he was wearing in the Splendour interview and a couple of other events, too?

BRAD has a NECKLACE! I thought it was Ryan's, but Ryan's chain is silver, I think. And it looks like Brad's golden. Brad has tight jeans, too, which made me very happy.

I absolutely love Craig's haircut now. He looks so good with long hair. It falls around his face nicely and he can still wear it messy in the back. It looks washed, too. Sweaty, but washed. That's always a plus. And I think he looks like the old self even more now. I can't quite point a finger to what it makes me think that, though.

No beer bottle in sight around Ryan. I find that very odd. And frightening in a way. Changes are no good. And now I can really see how horribly long that shirt of Ryan's really is. I can't really live without crotch shots. But I DO like how Ryan's (and Craig's, too!) hair is kind of waving around.

Haha, did Brad help trash Hamish's hit? I really feel sorry about that kit. And the person that has to pick it up and pack it afterwards (that's Hamish probably No wonder he's so strong; he has to carry around the ruins all the time). Hamish looks really pissed off in the second one. I think he's using his drum stick to threaten Craig.

Brad has awesome hair, too. When I'm in Sydney (Ha! I wish. I'll get there for my 80th birthday, with my luck), I need to contact their hair stylist. And I could dig out some valuable information about their ... scalps. And I read somewhere lustrous hair is a sign of healthy people. Sexually attractive people, also.

I sadly repeat myself but i so wish i were there and I'm so glad for you. I hope people will stop saying they weren't that good in 2003 (Even though, i really love their performance when i watch the videos, anyways ) and wil start saying they were incredible in 2007! This is a very good year for 'em at the moment.
