After 13 and 1/2 years, my parents have just revealed to me that I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome at around 6-8 yrs old, after I finished talking with them about Craig Nicholls and how he has it. Turns out that my father also has it and my mother might just have it as well; and so it has been genetically inherited by me.

I've always known that there was something different about me and I could never quite put my finger on it, but now it's all making sense. I now have an even greater respect for Craig, knowing what he must be going through and it's great having a role model like him to look up to.

So am I alone? Does anyone else on this forum have Aspergers?

it runs in families alot

and yeah there are a handful of members here with it
theres really no problem discussing it if you have it here

maybe then those who don't will have a better understanding about what it is then just these generic descriptions of it circling the internet

I was diagnosed with it 2 months ago
my dad was diagnosed with it 2 weeks later as well as my brother with a really minor case of it

I don't think I've mentioned that yet here

probably cause i got diagnosed with it after the lead singer of my favorite band was and I didn't want to seem like I was just trying to be like him laugh.gif

but yeah
the treatment I've gotten for it is the only treatment I've ever gotten thats actually made an improvement
and its made a big improvement

behavioral stuff
explanations

tips, clarifications, exercises, support

no meds
I was against meds from the start

I've have a shit history with them when my past doctors were trying to alleviate my "ADD, depression, social anxiety, and Obsessive Compulsive traits" dry.gif

so I've just been kinda taught to take a different approach to things and not to worry so much on all these people telling me that I should be one way or another

What treatment do you get?

I don´t get treatment at all..

Like Aesthetic_Dame, my mum saw a person who specialized in AS and she gave us all of these tips and behavioral activities to help treat it. She also put me on these little Gummie Bear looking/tasting things which helped somehow or other...

Some cow of a girl yelled out "show us your ass burgers Craig!" at the Thursday show dry.gif . That really annoyed me - sorry I don't really have anything to add here, that last post just reminded me of that incident tongue.gif .

I have ACHOO syndrome it stands for autosomal dominant compelling heliopthalmic outburst syndrome, that basically means I have uncontrolable outbusts of snezing when I enter bright light People with ACHOO syndrome have hypersensitivity to light, I think thats why i get lots of headaches.

I have lots of friends with Aspergus syndrome, one of them sits with me at lunch I have to defend him from people all the time because he dosn't understand how he should behave around people. But it's not all people picking on him for no reason, he's really disgusting, he spits on people and has lice which he refuses to comb out of his hair. when he first came everyone thought he was normal, but i worked it out pritty fast, he walks around with teachers aids and talks kinda funny. I don't really know what to do about him cause the rest of my friends hate him and i know he's nice so i don't want him to get bashed. This sounds like an advice colum qusestion but what do i do?

Afew teachers have suggested i may have a very mild form of Aspergus syndrome but my parents don't listen cause how can any of there perfect children be not perfect.

I have HFA which is closely related to AS. I mean I don't ever publicly "freak out" or anything, but in stressful/unfamiliar situations my head will just turn off. Sort of like a computer crashing if you're trying to shove too much information through it. Aside from that it's pretty much the same as AS.

Aaaaaaaaand despite being diagnosed about 6 months ago, you're the first people I've told. Congratulations.

You definately aren't alone.

I have a disorder somewhere on the spectrum but its probably something mild. I was diagnosed at 11.
When I was younger I was quite odd, but I guess I've learnt how to fit in and act like other people. But I still have my eccentricities and obsessions. I still suffer from social anxiety but I've learnt to hide it. I can freak out and become antisocial in unfamiliar situations though.

Having an idea of what Craig puts up with and how much he has overcome gives me an even greater respect for him. Listening to his music has been such a therapy for me. I think its mainly a matter of how you manage it. Craig is a great example of that, look at how these small changes in his life have made such a postive effect on him. He's happier than ever.

I do. And yeah like my entire family on my mom's side has it I'm pretty sure, although I don't know how many of them have been diagnosed with it, I'm just speaking from my observations.

Yeah they're very similar
my doctor pretty much interchanges the two with me when it comes to talking about things
they're slightly different diagnoses but they get pretty much the same treatment and those with it have a majority of the same problems (and nice quirks as well tongue.gif )

well we're glad you felt comfortable enough on here to mention it Ryan

I was like unsure.gif when I was writing up my response to the thread

I really don't know why
but its regarded as a bit more of a sensitive subject here

You can't accuse me of copying Craig; I'd hardly call myself a Vines fan these days or indeed for the past three years or so. Perhaps I subconsciously stole it from Kevin Shields though. That's acceptable since he is INDIE AS, y'know?

Ow my feet, dropping names...

It's only a sensitive subject if you make it one. My mates are always talking about throwing toothpicks on the floor and asking me to count them, or asking me to do ridiculous multiplications, and I have a laugh about it, it's cool. In fact, one of the reasons I haven't told anyone is that I don't want them to feel weird around me and stop doing things like that.

well people do love finding a label for their problems
that you'll find anywhere, not just on an internet forum

sometimes they get help for it or accept it and work it out on their own and sometimes they use it as an excuse to not be the best they can be

I don't think there is anything wrong with the first way of using a diagnosis
but I do think that most of these things are just natural normal personality variations and that people need to stop viewing them as some clinical thing wrong with them that should be used to get stuff from other people, whether it be pity or accomodations that in the end set them back in development of life skills

people with the more uncommon, severe disorders and such may need more accomodations and such so I'm not saying "suck it up you whiney bastards" or anything of that sort especially if you really do have a disorder that affects you in a way that you just can't function, I'm not any of these other people so I really don't know how they are affected by things

I think the point of this thread was to be more open about the stuff and to discuss it instead of just putting down people who have clinical disorders, whether they're common or not or whether they're over-diagnosed or not, because everyone has problems and everyone needs a bit of support with stuff once in a while

if you're going to complain that people label their problems you're fighting a losing battle

and yeah, some people may claim to have disorders and such because they have some urge to be able to relate with some famous person they love, but that doesn't mean that anyone who REALLY has the disorder AND happens to be a fan is a disoriented kook
and none of us can really know who really has what

I don't have Aspergers Syndrome either, but I have been diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Specifically Disorganized Schizophrenia. I don't hallucinate all that much, nor do "voices control me," I just have what they call "disotrted thinking" and have sudden lapses of paranoia. Personally, I think, it makes me a better writer (I'd love to become a famous writer smile.gif )

Just thought I'd share blink.gif

I don't really being diagnosed with certain things because i don't feel they are legit. All of the conclusions that were formed around my " diagnosis" were just assumed by a series of questions. I was quite irritated that they can just make a diagnosis so easily. I'm diagnosed with depression and ADD but i refuse to take the meds. I know for sure that i do have both, the depression is severe, but there are just too many bad things about medication. I'm certainly not saying that it isn't be beneficial to those who would be truely lost without it, but too many people are taking it just for the hell of it. I hate those people that just love walking around with certain labels, as if it makes them appear more interesting or experienced in the sense of life.

There is the valid argument over the causes of these mental disorders. For example, depression is either believed to be caused by a chemical imbalance, or simply your outlook on life at that particular period. I personally believe it can be both, depending on the individual.
Maxwell Demon
yeah

you go into a psychiatrist's office and say "I'm depressed and axious around people" and they say "Well, you have depression and social anxiety, heres a prescription".... and they charge you $200 for it

laugh.gif
Minnesoter_Matinee
Exactly! It's ridiculous how loosely they prescribe things!

I know you were joking, but it´s not even remoteley like that in Europe.
In most countries there are not enough doctors, who know what AS is.

Asperger syndrome isn't recognized by everybody in Europe ( in the classifications and all ). Seems like diagnose it is even "risked" for a professional because of that. There's only one book by Tony Attwood translated in my language. Quite worrying.
