I know three people personally that have been diagnosed with AS, one adult and two children. I guess doctors and psychologists are really reluctant to diagnose it because, really, there isn't much in the way of knowledge about it, or it's very limited. People currently seem to be looking into it much more and adding more information about it in the DSM. At least that's what I'm told anyway.
I know the school systems can be a challenge for kids growing up with AS because teachers recognize a lot of the signs of AS and automatically assume that the child has some kind of attention deficit or kind of treats them like a disturbance instead of giving them the extra attention and guidance they need. The kids I know that have been diagnosed with AS have a very severe case and their teachers in school just aren't able to cope with it and their school psychologist outright refuses to accept the diagnosis as a legitimate one and refuses to help them in any way. It's really appalling how they're reacting to something they don't understand and refuse to learn about. It's really unfair.
