The Vines made their UK festival comeback tonight (August 25) with a spirited set at the Carling Weekend: Reading.

The band, who had to curtail their touring after to frontman Craig Nicholls was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, played a greatest hits before a huge crowd on the NME/ Radio 1 stage.

The highlight was a storming run through the 2002 single 'Get Free'.

Speaking to NME.COM afterwards, Nicholls declared himself "delighted" to be back, and added: "It was so cool to be asked. I really enjoyed it."

Nicholls confirmed the band would only be touring in small blocks in the future, until he felt completely well, and that a new album is on the cards for 2007.

i know that's coming from craig, so you've gotta take it with a grain of salt , but that would indicate he's at least writing new songs or maybe the band is even working as a group on new songs. that might also explain why craig keeps hinting that they will tour next year.

I'm so happy the set went well for the guys! Not that I expected anything less than brilliant from The Vines considering their current form . And a new album next year?! Agh! That's just the best news ever! And the guys look very hot in those pics ... yummy .

THATS AWESOME, wow craig and the gang looked amazing. and im happy that their still gaining more confidence when it comes to the touring. BUT KICKASS ANOTHER ALBUM FOR 2007

The Reading & Leeds Festival 2006 will be televised on BBC Three on Saturday 26 Aug, from 8:00 pm - 2:00 am and it was announced that the Vines set will be televised (not sure if anything was televised this evening). Then between 2.00am and 3.00am they'll show highlights of the Radio 1 NME Stage. So if anyone can possibly tape this, that would rock!!

Making their glorious return to the shores of England after a hiatus of more than two years, The Vines were sure to bask in the warmth of their own popularity. A packed NME/Radio 1 tent seemed to perspire as drips of condensed sweat fell from the ceiling onto the punters. With the light outside the tent rapidly fading, the Craig Nicholls-led quartet elucidated their return to form with a performance that grew brighter with each minute.

There was a distinct feeling in the tent that their absence from touring had done very little to diminish their popularity, and although the earlier tracks of the set, including Highly Evolved, lacked charisma, the crowd showed their appreciation vocally. The band gained sustenance from this; the louder the crowd roared, the better they played, and the more relaxed they seemed to feel.

“Good evening, it’s great to be back” shouted Nicholls half way through the set. The man of few words was clearly touched by the support his band were shown, and after finishing their classic cover of Outcast’s, Ms. Jackson, Nicholls muttered “thank you, it is very emotional for us to be back”, before thundering into Get Free clearly a crowd favorite.

The end of the gig climaxed, Nicholls with his trademark flailing on stage like a fish out of water, his movements as erratic and unpredictable as the English weather. His guitar, so often an instrument of fabulous creation, became one of destruction as he swung wildly knocking down cymbals, mic stands and anything else that happened to be in the way.

A broken guitar and a destroyed set mark the revival of the Vines.

yeah i just got back from staring at tv for hours! i only saw outtathaway i dont tihnk they have shown any other songs form the guys yet...although its on for another hour yet till 3 am!

i would have come on earlier but i was like....wow..... they were fantastic!!!!!! my mum started crying at the tv because she was so pleased craig's doing so well.


if you were watching on bbc3, if you'd pressed the red button, they were on there doing the whole set a few times i managed to watch it twice

i was going to do it last night until my mum pointed out that
1. we dont have a VHS recorder
and
2. we dont have a recordable dvd player.
which should be kind of obvious but .... im sorry .... ill ask around and see if anyone can tape it for us
