Franz Ferdinand are certainly not the best alternative group in years; they've made some good, catchy songs, but they've done nothing new or innovative or hugely exciting. Moreover, as rap existed - with a great number of fans - long before now, I don't think that you can claim that Franz Ferdinand are 'just changing to what's popular now' - particularly as they're pretty much what's popular now.

im sry that im not specific cuz i meant 1 of.and if u think franz ferdinand is wats popular not in the us. theyre album went gold witch is good buteminem and usher and crap that is or used to be whats popular had 4 platinum and 9 platinum albums. aldo franz ferdinand single this fire isnt doing to well in the states. it only peaked at 17 on the billboard modernd rock charts.

I don't really know much about music sales, because I like bands no matter how popular they are, but I'll try and answer anyway. Given that Franz Ferdinand seem genuinely passionate about music, and specifically the type of music they make, I don't think they're going to suddenly going to change genre just so they can 'go platinum'. Can you see Alex Kapranos rapping about his bitches just so he can get a bigger truck? If so, then you're not a genuine fan of Franz Ferdinand. For a rock act who have released only one album on a reasonably small label, I think 'going gold' is actually pretty successful. Of course established artists such as Eminem and Usher are going to have more sales, because a] as just ascertained, they're established acts with strong fanbases, and b] their types of music are the most commonly-bought. This is not to say that rock isn't popular, as it patently is; also, more specifically, Franz Ferdinand have topped many opinion polls for the best album of 2004, and been nominated for - and will win - rather a few awards. Moreover, I'm not sure how many singles Franz Ferdinand have released in America so far, but later singles from albums tend not to do as well commercially as their predecessors, purely because many people have bought the album on the strength of the first couple of singles and don't need them, and even because people get a little sick of hearing a band release yet another single from one album. So if my fourth or fifth single charted at number 17, I'd be rather pleased.
