Ok. is it true that The Vines are going to be playing Reading Festival 2006 3rd from the top on the Radio 1 stage. Apparently (quite a big apparently) as some guy said on efestivals.co.uk they were announced by triple J radio to play this slot and UK shows are in August/September. I don't know if he's from Australia, cos I certainly ain't so it doesn't really help.
WHATS GOING ON!!!!

We believe so. they said they were going to do a some festivals and gigs, so this one might be on the list!
They're back!!!

Haha I have tickets already!!! I try and go every year to Reading now. Well it's not strictly London where I live but close enough, it's just easier to say London.

If you go to the Reading or Leeds official websites there's a slot on the NME stage that just lists "Special Guests". If they're playing, that would be them.

Jul 23 2006, 09:36 PM
vonman is saying some dj already announced their specific slot - they're 3rd from the top on the radio 1 stage. (see first post)
i'm glad they're doing this. in many ways, the UK has been more supportive of the band than their home country - at least, up until VV. and this is a great opportunity to play two massive gigs in two days to a ton of people, which should be a good situation for craig.

Yer the Radio 1 tent is pretty good and well size wise it is probably 8,000 - 10,000, although if they do play (which now seems like 99% certain) they do clash with Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Kaiser Chiefs who are very popular here on the main stage

but for me it's Vines all the way!!!
Oh and it would be nice to actually see them second, I mean Dizzee Rascal second on the bill, wtf is that all about, he's a grime artist!!! Tho he did go down quite well in 2004, unlike 50 cent who got bottled off stage.

well, you will have to take numerous pictures and record the performance for us if you can! we'll be waiting at our computers like this

until you return and post.
um, being billed at the same time as YYYs and kaiser chiefs isn't the best, but i still feel like they'll draw a nice sized crowd. people love a comeback!
they're on before dizzee rascal?

i bet dizzee and his people see the vines are on before him and are like 'who da fuck are da vines?'

Ah, it's the Radio 1 / NME stage:
RADIO 1 / NME STAGE
PRIMAL SCREAM
DIZZEE RASCAL
SPECIAL GUESTS
SECRET MACHINES
MYSTERY JETS
PEACHES
GOGOL BORDELLO
GUILLEMOTS
THE LONG BLONDES
FIELDS
DUELS
Actually it's Dizzee Rascal that seems a little out of place there, doesn't he?
clash4life
Jul 23 2006, 10:33 PM
Yeah he does doesn't he? So they will be playing on a smaller stage? Or will bands be able to draw huge crowds on this stage too? It would be cool to see the Vines come and draw and huge crowd and just rip it up. That would be so cool.

It's like a second stage at Reading/Leeds, it's in a tent but it's about 8,000-10,000 people and to give an idea of how big a stage it is reputation wise it has been headlined in past years gone by by Supergrass, Bloc Party and this year The Raconteurs are headlining it so it is considered pretty big. I think it's perfect for The Vines to play in.

Jul 23 2006, 11:42 PM
that's the same-sized crowd they played to at splendour, so they should be fine. it's been four years and much drama since they last played reading (remember, they were set to play the festival in 2004 but cancelled), so i'd imagine they'll be a good draw for the curious and music fans.

Hi,
I'm 'Surrender' from e-fests. This whole business began here, in the Splendour thread on page 8. Forriepanther is the only user reporting the Triple J announcement at the moment, but the reason it's so credible is because it makes logical sense - they pulled out in 2004 (and traditionally bands like to compensate their fans where possible when it comes to Reading), the slot is the right 'size' (commercially), it would explain why nobody has discovered the guests by this stage (usually they are discovered quite early on... with the band on touring ice, nobody would suspect), word on the dreamintheinsane mailing list is that the UK tour dates are August/September... it's all a happy coincidence.
Without confirmation I don't want to mislead anyone, but suffice it to say that if it comes about they will likely make my festival, and they are slot-primed for a variety of new converts too. Maybe we'll see you there.
(Edit: Allie heard it too? Anyone else?)
wonkytooth
Jul 24 2006, 12:12 PM
actually, a lot of us heard it confirmed after their interview with triple j when they said the band would be doing reading. triple j announced it and shows in sydney and melbourne in september.

And now it's on the Triple J website (http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/musicnews/s1695253.htm):
'The Vines will start again with shows in Sydney & Melbourne in September before heading overseas to play the Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK.'
As vonman's pointed out on DTI, though, Reading is at the end of August, hopefully just a scary editing error!
Anyway, the evidence is mounting (apparently a whole bunch of people heard it, I've been inundated with e-mails and pm's.. thanks to everyone corrobarating, I'm miles away from the source!). I'm on a bit of a knife edge waiting for official word.

I'll be there all day too - I was going to see Peaches and Gogol Bordello anyway. It's a shame The Vines clash with the YYYs, but in my mind The Vines are surely the perfect high-voltage festival band, and the Vision Valley songs seem like natural festival rock anthems.
Anyway, I'll be the disturbingly enthusiastic guy draped in an Australian flag. I can't wait.
