Full Version: Radio response to The Vines
The Vines Message Board > The Vines > The Vines General Discussion
the_likely_lad
So I emailed this station asking them to play DLTTR and here's what I got back:

I like the song and I love the band, but I think my boss would kill me if I
played a song that encouraged people to turn the radio off. If you've ever sen
the movie "Network," you can see what happens to a TV anchor who tells his
viewers to turn of the TV.

Seriously, we had a discussion about this and all of us were kind of insulted
that a band as cool as the vines would want us to play a song that - on the
surface at least - minimizes what we do. Did they not realize the backlash they
would have with dj's? The should have called it "Hang Up The Telephone" and we
wouldn't be having this conversation.

OMG, what the hell, that's soo stupid.
manger
Oh well. A lot of stations don't have a problem playing it, and for that one that does, it's their loss.

My sister's boyfriend hears that song on the radio all the time, and it hasn't made him stop listening to it. The stations who aren't secure enough with themselves to play that song can be sorry latter, when the Vines' wave comes back and sweeps everyone up. laugh.gif
the_likely_lad
I replied and told the guy how stupid that was and how people aren't going to 'switch off' the minute they hear that lyric.
wonkytooth
that dj is scared of a song title? what a spineless wanker. rolleyes.gif
Feedums
LOLLAZ!

What a douchebag. He shouldn't have made such a huge deal out of it. Nothing wrong with a bit of self-mockery, you cunts.

Is this radio station populated by morons? Who actually interprets everything they hear on radio literally? In that case, they'd better not play Ladytron's 'Destroy Everything You Touch' either. That could be disastrous.

Yeah, Craig was going to call it "Hang Up the Telephone", but the phone companies threatened to sue, so he changed his mind. rolleyes.gif
marilyn_monroe
Yeah, I think that's a bit ridiculous rolleyes.gif . I mean, who's going to take the song seriously? huh.gif Craig called it a "funny song" so it's not meant to be taken literally. It's not like people are going to switch off their radios after hearing the song laugh.gif ...that's pretty ridiculous
Maxwell Demon
laugh.gif
thats extremely funny

someone should send that to some publication that reports ridiculous stories or something
SomethingFunny
PEOPLE DO YOU RELISE THAT CRAIGS TELLING HIS FANS AND LISTENERS THAT HE HIMSELF DOPESN'T LISTEN TO THE RADIO.

HAVE A LOOK... "DON'T LISTEN TO THE RADIO, I GOT NO TV YO...or along those lines.

so....if the radio are that dumb and have no idea what the song means then thats fucked up.
so craigs telling us he doesnt listen to it. not the other way around

..I completely understand that radios have trouble with playing a song called "Don't Listen to the Radio", <-- that title is a message against radios
be thankful they answered you back,
Romny
It IS pretty freakin' stupid and small minded, but it's not to difficult to get it, y'know - hard not to sort of understand where they're comin' from. (not that understanding it makes it any more intellegent) .
You know what? We should each just, like, bombard our local radio stations with calls, e-mails, texts, - whatever - and let them know that we're definetly NOT going to turn our radios off unless they do NOT play our boys' song!!! Let them know that their ratings or whatever may even go up, and that we're all out here and we're all jonesin' hard for the new Vines tune!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif

^ what the hell are you talking about here ?
gypseyrou2005
The radio station here calls it "Dont Listen" laugh.gif laugh.gif
Spaceship
reatrded...there will never be progress in music this way...
and guess what...people are gonna stop listening to the radio after years cuz Craig says so
clash4life
I really think this is awful. I mean they can play music that has lyrics with alot more language. I know that video music channels will play this video because it really doesn't effect them at all. A real shame.
LockedInAFreezer
I think that eventually these radio stations that are afraid their listeners will become brainwashed by a song (how impressionable do these people think we are?) will be forced to play it because it's going to catch on. It's a catchy pop song and it's got quite a bit of anticipation building around it, so eventually they'll get over it.

I just wish they'd start playing it around here. I bet they've never even heard of it. And it hasn't crossed my mind to request until just now... laugh.gif
SomethingFunny
Err... I meant Craig is saying he 'don't listen to the radio'
he's not telling anyone to not listen to the radio, he's saying he doesnt listen to the radio.
like listen to the lyrics and the way he sings the lyrics

Hes not yelling DONT LISTEN TO THE RADIO. hes like singing it in a way about how he don't listen to the radio and have a tv. etc

i think everyones small minded when it comes to songs sometimes especially radio stations like OOooOooo it has the word 'don't' and 'radio' if they actually listening to it properly they'd understand.

ARGh

ohwell
SomethingFunny
btw I rung up Nova 91.9 radio station here and requested DLTTR and the presenter goes "YES, I absolutely love that song!" " then continued to ask me how I felt abou the break so he was really interested in them YAY
i think they have alot of new fans WOO

so.....I guess some radio stations are smart smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif or just think its catchy.
clash4life
I always like to here that. I havn't heird the song yet on the radio but i hope to soon. I will try and request that song on the radio station in my city. Give the Vines a boost in Canada. Not that they need one. Or maybe they do i havn't heird them much on the radio here.
Romny
I think I"m gunna see about maybe e-mailing one of my local stations or someting and ask if they'll play DLTTR. I don't sit there listening to radio 24/7, but I do listen every once in a while - I'm always either sleeping, working, or some damn thing. Anyway, the rock stations I usually chek in with - I've never heard The Vines on them!!!! But, then again, I never hear The Strokes on them either and one of these stations was still a sponser for the concert The Strokes gave out here last Friday. rolleyes.gif So, who knows - maybe I'll get through, maybe I won't. But, in fact, I may cruise over one of the stations sites and see about right now . . .

Got a new reply:

Its easy to say that from outside the media bubble, but radio is under attack
from all sides - TV, computers, iPods, etc. Then here comes a band that wants
to be clever. Never mind that people in my job get fired for drops in ratings
and revenue that are less the result of the songs they play and mre a result of
an ever-shifting marketplace.

In the end, you're right, its just a song. But I'm not going to rock the boat
for a song that doesn't respect what I do and the risks I take in trying to keep
people entertained. But there's freeom of choice out there; if the record can
make it without radio then its truly our loss. Honestly, there are better songs
to fight for than this one.

And for the record, I hate Nicekelback.

"Risks I take in trying to keep people entertained"? Yes, I'm sure the life of a radio DJ is rife with peril.

And how is it showing respect for what the Vines do when you refuse to play one of their songs just because of the title? Not to mention the ridiculous lack of respect that the Vines have been shown by all media outlets in the past few years.

Perhaps there is some validity in his initial point, but his terrible defence has made me lose any consideration for his position.
SomethingFunny
HAHAHAHA

If I ever want to explain what a small minded person is to someone i'll just show them what that radio person said

The main Radio presenters love the song here :S

yes nickleback are "yawn"

BUT they fucking are

Well instead of having a laugh he decided to take it literally. And how the heck Nickleback makes it in the message. It's The Vines idiot. LOL and i'm gonna go hound Nova 96.9 to play it, right after the charts.
Helter Skelter
ok for you people who hear it on the radio, do you live in the US?

you do realize that's probably what *every* DJ says after playing that song - and they probably think they're being so clever. rolleyes.gif tongue.gif

for those of you in the UK, zane lowe is set to play them this week, and EMI is asking that you call and request the vines and give positive feedback to they'll keep them on the radio there. wink.gif

What a tool! Long live stations like triple J who dont give a rats about underlying issues with lyrics in a song.

Triple M have put The Vines back on their playlists BTW. Fucking Jobbers.

Triple J is wub.gif I'm so happy they're supporting the Vines, it just goes to show they're all about the good music and not playing whatever people want to hear. I have been listening to it pretty much all day everyday this week so I can hear the Vision Valley tracks they're playing. I love how they don't care about all the bad press the Vines have been getting in the last couple of years. Unlike certain other stations. dry.gif

I didn't know Triple M had started playing them again. mellow.gif I guess they've realised noone gives a shit about what happened at the Annandale anymore.
Jaded
^^ Exactly. I'm glad their getting more airplay, but still... Triple M are a bunch of bogan oldies, considering their reaction to the annandale incident. But... The more Vines the better I say!
i feel to it
has anyone from canada ever heard this song on the radio? its a good song, i dont if its released here tho..

I don't listen to the radio (pun only partially intended) so I've not heard it, but I'm sure that they're playing it somewhere. Radio 3 would probably play it.
