Craig Nicholls Reveals New Lease on Life
by Eve Jenkin
March 6 2006
Although notoriously hard to deal with in the past, Vines front man Craig Nicholls has revealed details of his illness Asperger’s Syndrome and discussed his reformed ways in a “tell-all” interview with the Observer.
Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, results in stunted social skills and erratic behaviour, often noted in Nicholls’ onstage performances and interviews. But he assures the Observer he has a mild case. “I remember when I was 15, I spoke to a couple of psychologists. But I don’t think they diagnosed me with anything. So. Maybe it grew. Maybe it became more intense when I started in the band. But I’m not really sure.” He continued: “I feel comfortable writing songs. It’s a good outlet for me. Seeing as though I’m not that social, it’s a way to communicate.”
Perhaps his out-of-character discussion regarding his illness is due to quitting “da ‘erb”. Previously, Nicholls was renowned for carrying smoking paraphernalia with him wherever he went, now he has reportedly been clean for 9 months. “I never drank alcohol,” he explained. “[Smoking] was just the thing I did. It made me calm. But it started not making me calm at all. It made me edgy, so it wasn’t good.”
Nicholls also spoke about how the new album from his band The Vines, “Vision Valley” will not be accompanied by excessive touring but will remain more of a studio project and outlet for Nicholls’ creativity. The first single from the album, “Gross Out” will be available from March 21st.
