Out today...bought today...blown away..

I'm absolutely fucking speechless as to how amazing this album is!! Best debut album EVER...if not just THE best album ever!!!

ohmy.gif x 2764398302174936514610365931

I'd be quite happy to set fire to the rest of my CD collection as long as i could keep this one.
wonkytooth
^ before you go burning ALL your other cds *coughs and points at helen's sig* what about those guys? sad.gif

nme gave it a '10' and now you're saying it's the second coming...can it be that good? huh.gif i've heard some songs and they're swell enough, but the hype scares me. unsure.gif

Anekdoten
I might just get it today, just for the sake of it.
annie
damn you. dry.gif

it's not available in the states until february 21. rolleyes.gif
Ava Adore
i heard one of their songs and i didnt think it was that great...
Feedums
I used to like them lots, but the hype has made them less special for me. I can't watch MTV without having to listen to their music and it's driving me crazy. Besides, they're no different than any other 'indie' band at the moment, so I'm mad at NME for giving the album a 10... it's bullshit.
Thomhatesmusic
If they put "I bet you look good on the dancefloor" it can't be the best record ever. I fairly like them but oh well. I LOVE The Vines and I don't think they made the best records ever.

Are you serious? For some reason i thought it would be out january 30th...but then i heard about it on here and i was like " oh shit, it's out!$@*#".

But really? February 21st?
Venereal Disease
What a fantastic title. rolleyes.gif

I want it, I like them...
Thomhatesmusic
I really really like the cover. mellow.gif
Tinkerbell
It's the worst album cover ever.

Also, it's not that great. Good record, some catchy songs, but the best thing ever? Not even close. Most of the songs were better in demo form. Riot Van was completely ruined.

wonkytooth
^ i was waiting to hear what you thought of it, tinks - i trust your opinion. so the demos are better and nme is outta control with the hype? *sigh* what else is new... rolleyes.gif

did you get it on import?
Tinkerbell
It leaked a few weeks ago, which is why they moved up the UK release date.

I have it on pre-order so I'll get my real copy in February. And it is worth having, don't get me wrong. It's just not the most amazing thing ever that people are making it out to be. Certainly not the 5th best British record ever released, which is just crazy talk. NME.... rolleyes.gif
Thomhatesmusic
What's wrong with the cover?

Do you have a link that is still working (grrr) for the demos? I only have five of them.

I can check around when I get home and see if any links are still working. If I find one I'll post it for you. If not, and you know what you want I can post a yousendit for you. smile.gif
Thomhatesmusic
That's probably why I like it.

Thanks a lot smile.gif

who are they trying to be with that cover? a modern the smiths? huh.gif smiths' covers are memorable - that is quite simply unremarkable. rolleyes.gif

i plan to pick the cd up at target the day it comes out, but i guess i'm less excited than i was about getting it. still, it's got to be better than 99% of music out there at the moment.
Thomhatesmusic
Out there?
You mean, as in "available"?
I don't agree.
Tinkerbell
Aha! It took a while but I found a downloads page for the demos.

www.mardybum.com

If it doesn't take you to the downloads, on the right of the main page is a little list. Click on music downloads and that should take you there. smile.gif

And Jen don't be too disappointed. Like I said it's a good record, it's just not the second coming of Christ or anything. wink.gif

what new band(s) is setting your world on fire then these days? i could hardly come up with a list of 'ten best albums' for last year. mellow.gif

and thanks for the link, tinks. smile.gif
green_scissors
I haven't read any of the hype...not one bit, and i don't have music channels! I've had the demos for about a year now i think
and i do agree with Tinkerbell...i definitely prefer the demos...doesn't stop it being and amazing album though. I just hope people aren't going to do the whole "oh they're big now...everyone's hyping them so i'm not gonna like them"...i fucking HATE THAT!!! Winds me up that people say they don't like albums when really they're just doing it because they think NOT liking them is cool...pathetic!!

P.S. I'm not really gonna burn all my CDs (especially not the ones by you know who!! ohmy.gif )...i just got a bit excited....ya'll know my heart belongs to The Vines wub.gif

Oohhh, and one more thing.....i think us Brits will fall in love with the album more/in a different way than the rest of the wolrd because it largely refers to the youth culture and society over here...aswel as being sung with a Northern UK accent/lingo/slang. I think we can relate and connect it to it in a completely different than any other countries could.

P.P.S. Why is my opinion not trustworthy?? sad.gif *sniff* unsure.gif
comradestripe
I should listen to it, but there's no way I'm buying it. I'm assuming it's as bad as Five Minutes With...

ohmy.gif i didn't mean to imply that at all!! i've known tinks for *gasp* three years now, and we're often on the same page about bands, so i value her judgment. and i agree with you that you shouldn't listen/not listen to a band based on hype, though it's unfortunate that overhyping a band sometimes results in people forming high opinions only to be let down. i've really, really liked what i've heard by the arctic monkeys so far, and as i already said, i'm planning to get the cd the day it comes out. i've listened to some more demos at that site tinks linked, and so far, so good.

of course they're touring nowhere near the south. sad.gif
Tinkerbell
I don't hate them, I like their songs very much. Though it's totally not their fault, if the likes of the NME and British press keep up the way they have been though (5th best record ever released, voice of a generation, etc.) people will start to hate them because it's too over the top. And they seriously have to stop being dicks in interviews as well, because it looks like they're starting to believe all their hype. Huge mistake.

And I disagree that you have to be British to really "get" them. I liked them way before a lot of my Brit friends did. It's all down to what you like, regardless of where you come from.

Closest their coming to me is Chicago so don't feel bad Jen.

Wolf Parade, Interpol (I think last release 2004 would still be "out there"), Joanna Newsom (not a band), Regina Spektor ("), The Gnomes, The Stands (who sadly just split up), Final Fantasy, Mando Diao, ect.

Thanks a lot for that link. smile.gif
zoey
I agree with Green Scissors- it's a very british album sung in a very british accent but i don't think it deals with anything so particular it can't be enjoyed by people from all over the place.

I really like the album, i've seen them play a couple of times and both were truly fantastic, so definately worth the cash/journey if they play near you.
Rock'n'roll lies
I've been told the demos are a lot better than the album versions. The name is pretty lame. I'll prob still get it soon though, I think it came out here yesterday. I heard I bet you look good on the dancefloor on a commercial radio station yesterday, so give it a month or two and everyone will be all, "I'm like, so over them"....
I think that the Britishness of it might matter in America a bit, but places like here it won't. I prefer British bands with British accents. I rarely listen to much else, and I don't have any trouble relating to it.
Anekdoten
The radio said this fellow from NME said that it was in the top 6 albums ever. Yes.
Feedums
Yes, 'best British records' or something? It's on number 5, I believe. HAHAHAHAHAHA. As fucking if.
Anekdoten
The played a few songs from it.. It didn't seem that great.
Jammeh
I think they should split up. It'd be a fantastic statement. Turning up out of nowhere, making the fastest selling debut album in history, and then shrugging their shoulders and walking off.

The Manics promised to do that, but they had neither the sales nor the strength of material at that point to do it. If I was in their position right now, I'd definitely end the band.

upper than Pulp's Different Class. How fair.

and haha Jammeh thumbs up.
comradestripe
That list was terrible. The whole magazine was a disgrace.
Thomhatesmusic
I read that today, what actually makes me shudder is that I think some people out there believe these kind of lists.

I was in Amsterdam today and every music store I went into they had tons of the CDs. Also these special deals everywhere "Get a poster for free" ect.
ED aka the best everrr
aw I want a poster. I got one in the NME but threw it out on accident. Although I have no room on my walls...I'd make some room for them...if it was airbrushed.
stelaris
I think its an ok album... havent listened to all the songs yet but I can tell they all sound quite similar. still, pretty good. I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor is awesome....
omgwtf
Incredibly over-rated. It's very dissapointing, infact, it's safe to say it's another NME hyped upped piece of bland shit. They're nothing special, they're almost painfully average.
ED aka the best everrr
Of course there's way too much hype but I don't think they're average by any means. I mean some of the themes are typical teenage stuff as that's expected from teenagers...but lyrically...they're way better than much of what is coming out today.

This isn't being said to anyone on here...but I know of people who are like 'aw they're shit now' and that's getting to me...the songs are the same (minus Riot Van heh) since they were last year...just because others like them, it shouldn't mean that you can't anymore.
Rock'n'roll lies
I got the album, and I think it's actually pretty boring. I only had a few of the demos downloaded, and they're pretty much the only songs on the album that I do like (Mardy Bum, I Bet You Look Good, Scummy, A Certain Romance) - the rest are really bleargh. Lyrically, they're pretty clever, but what they write about is just the same thing over and over, and musically they're rather bland. As for the NME putting it at no. 6 or whatever, that's just ridiculous. Better than albums like London Calling? You've got to be kidding.
ED aka the best everrr
I reeeeeally hate their forum!! I'm always having problems with it and I can only log in once out of every 4 or so tries...it's frustrating rar.
Tinkerbell
Their "offical" forum is pretty crap. The other one is a little better.

Both forums tend to be populated by text-speaking morons though. Or those people who try to type with a Cockney accent - you know, "I fink dere a bita alright eh?".

I hate that...
Minnesoter_Matinee
Are the songs on the album really that different from the demos? I obviously didnt buy it yet, but i'm just wondering.
Tinkerbell
Some of them are really different (Riot Van was destroyed on the album, although I liked the demo a lot), and some are pretty much the same. The demos were a little more sloppy and raw though, which I tend to like more than the spit-polished production on the album. For me that's the case for almost every band though.

It's a decent enough album I think. Good tunes and clever lyrics.
ED aka the best everrr
'the other one' which one is that? Mardy Bum? The people are wank but I want to get a NYC ticket.

The songs that they picked from the album...those demos aren't as raw as some of the earlier ones so I don't find them to be too much different. I think they missed out big on Cigarette Smoke, Ravey Ravey, Curtains Close, Space Invaders...the rawer sounding ones (I'm like that too...) they should of been on it.

Now about Riot Van...it might be because I haven't listened to the demo in a while...or the way he sings 'but they couldn't care less' but I don't see how it's so bad. The first listen I was appalled, but lyrics have grown on me tenfold...

When is the album coming out over here again? I'm definitely buying it just so we can try to help put them in the charts here...god imagine if it went into the top ten. With a sold out tour here...who knows?
Brush
i got a ticket for them in march and I wanted to go there with my cousin but itīs sold outz. so yeh. dry.gif
Feedums
I just heard the album version of 'When The Sun Goes Down'. It's dreadful. The demo is bloody brilliant. I don't get why bands do this.
