OH MY
comradestripe
I think it's a load of toss. Firstly, I don't see how they can rank the top 500 songs of all time...I'd be interested to see specific people's, but to just take a few and then average it is absurd. Secondly, it's clearly a list of "look how many 'old' songs we know! Aren't we cool?"; there's the obligatory nod to modern day popularity (hello Eminem and Outkast), but most of these are ranked highly because they're half a century old. Naturally, if these have been loved for that long, they should be high up, but how can a band like Blondie be so far down? And how can they just decide that Good Vibrations and God Only Knows are the best Beach Boys songs? To have Loser by Beck - a good song, I acknowledge - higher than A Design For Life by Manic Street Preachers is ridiculous; the latter is a perfect song genuinely cherished by thousands of people, which I wouldn't say for the latter. I suppose that's a bit hypocritical of me, having just said that some of them are only in there because people know them, but there are genuinely some songs which are liked because people really do know and love them, and I believe that Design, for example, is one of them. Moreover, if you're going to go for the 'oh, but some people REALLY love it' way with Beck, for example, where are The Magnetic Fields? They've created some absolutely wonderful songs, and they don't appear to be in there.

I could go on, but in short, as aforesaid, toss.

edit: My friend has persevered, and made the following observations:

1. I Believe I Can Fly by R Kelly is in there.
2. The highest Pixies song is at 410. How? Really, how?
3. Boys Of Summer by Don Henley is only at 416.
4. The highest Smiths song is at 425, and it's William, It Was Really Nothing. How? Really, how?
5. The highest Love song is at 436. How? Really, how?

How are these the greatest songs of all time if time hasn't ended yet? Think about that for a while.

WHAT THE HELL?! I read the magazine in the store and I noticed that the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" was really low on the list. 483. How the hell is "I Beleive I Can Fly" higher than it.

It's all objective, so don't get upset.

Who cares what a specific group of people think?

I agree with the statement "How are these the greatest songs of all time if time hasn't ended yet?". They really just seemed to name off a lot of songs that are well-known. And of course the Rolling Stones made the list... more than once.

no surprise there

It seems every list like this has all the same songs just moved up or down one number. The one in Q a while back was almost exactly the same.
little_washu712
I say the magazines make these lists only if they absolutely know that time will be ending in a matter of weeks.
jopkins the monkey
There are too many problems with that list to list...ha that sounds weird.

I think this is actually called "500 Most Popular Rock(ish) Songs"
help me!
i'm can't be bothered to read it all but, no offence to Rolling Stone or anyhting, but they have a very bad habit of picking alot of shit and crap albums and songs and the australian yearbook is just getting worse and worse.
