if it werent for the uk the vines would be nowhere and would have split up by now
all the best bands have to come to the uk to get started, the rest of the world know nothing about music

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. NME may have hyped them but their music is what's kept them around. That and their loyal fanbase.
Anyway the US is bigger than than England so I'm sure they made more of an impact here.

America is where everything happens. The money and fans can easily be found in america. They probly did get some fame from the UK but i am sure they found more fans after playing on Letterman or on the MTV awards.

Team America...
I loved that movie
now...I love alot of bands coming from the UK
...and the mainstream music scene in the US is 99% shit
but I wouldn't go as far as saying the without the UK these bands wouldn't have made it
besides The Vines were pretty huge in the mainstream here when they first got on the scene

Yeah i might sound a bit stupid, but atleast the British charts have good rock based music, which the vines were in.
The American charts make me sick, they pay no attention to the great American bands that are out now, which is right, the NME does promote the British and American bands, cause America disowns their own bands...

I know what you mean but it's a bit ridciulous saying a band gets somehwere purely on their music, magazines over hype them as the next big thing and ra ra ra, therefore, people go and buy their music.

Our charts are pretty much the same as the US's. Every so often an indie band manages to force it's way into the top ten, but 90% is R'n'B, boyband ballads and pisspoor trance music.
The Vines were popular in the UK a couple of months before the States. So fucking what? It was probably the record company's doing. The UK is quite small and has a large indie fanbase. It made sense for them to test the water in Britain before throwing them into the USA and letting them drown, before looking for another band to destroy with their appalling promotion. Because of them, I'd say that by September 2002 Winning Days was already doomed to fail. That's what happens when you shove a band down people's throats.

"USA, England and Europe"
That always cracks me up.
I'd love to see England get away from the EU just so they see they're not as strong as they think they are. In everything.
Yet again. I wouldn't want that. I love England.

Jan 7 2006, 09:58 AM
Well, how many belgian, polish and estnish bands do you KNOW?
XAnimalxMachineX
Jan 7 2006, 10:26 AM
Well, it depends on where you're from and what language you speak. Of course you're not going to know any Belgian, Polish, or whatever bands because, you can't really speak the language (or maybe you can, who knows) and you probably wouldn't even know what it is, even if it was thrown at you.
I mean, how easy would it be to distribute a band to English speaking countries when they don't even speak English? Yeah, you have J-Rock and German bands or guys like Laibach...
But, you know, the likely-hood of hearing about a Yugoslavian band in the States, UK, or Down under is just... very slim. xD
Thomhatesmusic
Jan 7 2006, 10:51 AM
It's not about the language. People wo don't know english listen to english music as well. Plus there are enough bands from other countries who sing in english.
It's about the industry and the fact that it's harder to get to music like that because it's less available. That doesn't mean there are less good musicians in these countries.
I know , that's what I meant.

very very very easy
take Japan
any band could go to Japan and have a straight sold out show.
they don't understand the words but theyre suckers for a great live show.
every band from NZ thats ever gone to play in Japan has been a bigger hit there then they have in their own country.
