I don't need to repeat here what we know all too well: The Vines are NOT as widely recognized as they should, they are underrated and underappreciated, many people are not even familiar with the name etc. etc.
But why, if their music is so awesome?
And I thought...maybe if they had a more "catchy" name things would have been different, maybe people would have paid more attention...
There are just too many bands of the The .....s kind...

rishikesh seems a mouthful, and it would have been much harder to play on words in news articles (ala 'growing on the vines,' 'tangled up in vines,' etc.), but if that was the name they'd chosen and all we ever knew, we'd love 'em just the same, no?

The original (and, in my opinion, rather appropo) name of the band was Rishikesh - the name of the place in India where the Beatles traveled on a quest for spiritual enlightenment. The Vines are now named after the 1960s band, The Vynes, fronted by Nicholls' father. Nicholls, commenting on the band name, has said that the name "sounds like guitar strings; it sounds like rain on trees."

I guess it's better than The Spastics. Plus there wouldn't have been that confusion with The Hives but I prefer The Vines. I also discovered more people know them than I originally thought (as I have been talking about them to friends more and more lately).

I'm glad they're the Vines. Imagine all the journalist paying more attention to the name and their homage to the Beatles than their music? They did that enough with Craig's dad's band and Nirvana.

Atleast The Vines sounds normal. The band itself are unique enough.

Sure a name catches people's attention like The Arctic Monkeys but it's the music that keeps them interested.

Unfortunately I think it was more Craig's personal problems and stage antics that were keeping people from really looking at anything else. Hopefully this time around it will be different.

Craig said he wanted to be called The Spastics and yeah. I think it should have been that. It does kind of go with them. It's still a 'the' band name, but it's a lot more interesting than 'The Vines'. Rishikesh sounds okay too.

The Spastics would have been a terrible name, especially now considering Craig's AS. The press have made fun of him enough.

I like the name the Spastics. And it was perfect for them.

I think part of the reason they're not more popular has much more to do with how they were marketed than how they actually are. And the fact that a lot of their gigs were pretty crap didn't help. None of which really has much to do with the band or music itself, but more what the record company thought they had or wanted to have.

I voted The Vines. I don't think the name Rishikesh suits them at all. And the other name they were thinking of going under - The Spastics? I really don't like that name - I mean I guess it does kinda suit them in a way - but it makes me think of this awful Aussie band called 'The Spazzies' so that ruins it .
