Errm, it was back in 2002, when MTV showed the video for Get Free. I liked it, so I listened to more songs, and I was a fan right away.
The Big M
Saw 'Get Free' Video, well a glimpse of it, didn't think much of it, turned it off.

2 days later, saw a friend in the good old Legal Studies class who had a Strokes album, I said, I've been to 5 stores to find it, etc etc..

In the end, he recommended them, so trusting his faith, I bought the CD...and ta-da

*And I thanked him for it on national tv.
Psychedelic Soul
my mate sent me the mp3 for homesick.. this was right after the album had just come out. i dug homesick so i bought the cd.
Ava Adore
my sister screwed up the copy she was burning of highly evolved and it was missing the first 3 songs so she gave it to me
Young and hopeless

one of my friends in Austria recommended them to me by the time Get Free was released. they came, saw and conquered. I loved them from the start, bought their record and drove all of my friends crazy with them...mmh...I still do so. biggrin.gif

art chick
Was ditching art class one day and went to the library. Was fliping through Rolling Stone when I noticed a picture of a really cute guy. Just about to turn the page I caught the word Beatles. So then very interested I read about the Vines liking the beatles and new album coming out bla bla bla
So I searched them on the net and saw Ride. Took nearly all of my computor's life to get the video to open, but I was hooked from those opening chords.
Then I went to the UK and saw that they were playing here just after I arrived. Definately fate. Went to see them live, and bought both albums. Loved them ever since.
mixolydian lydian
i just wanted to listen to different music
i read something about the vines
that was it
little_washu712
laugh.gif I saw them on the You Hear it First special and I kept saying "We worked at a McDonald's but we called it a Burger King" to people. I also taped them on the VMA's and wore out the tape
Dalai Lama
back then.. when i was in 7th grade and hung out with the high school people all day after school, and they talked about the vines. Then it happened to come on to my launch player, so i heard them. Then i went into the record exchange and they were playing it was all like that.

It's Destiny i know it.
manonweed
i got into them cause this guy told me a long time ago at an incubus concert i should listin 2 som band... i couldnt remember what he was sayin but it sounded like the vines but they he said it was a 5 person band and thye were from germany... i never found out who they were but that guy is cool cause he sorta helpedme find em ...

musecal
I was bored and called my older brother and asked him to list some good bands/songs to download on the ipod and whala...here we are.
kaleidoscope_eyes
i first saw 'get free' in 2002. i liked it but didnt think much of it. then i saw their performance at the mtv video music awards 2002..and i thought they were really good live. i, then, forgot about them again. then my friend's friend told me about them and she asked my friend to get her the cd for christmas 2003..then my friend wanted to know what i wanted for christmas..i didnt know what i wanted so i just said the vines cd coz by that time i heard 2 songs that i liked: 'get free' and 'highly evolved'. when i got the cd, i listened to a couple of songs which resulted in throwing it aside and forgetting about it..then one particular day (this was like a month later) i was cleaning my room and found it...i decided to give it another listen and fell in love with them. the end...shit, that was long.
sunchild.
i feel like such a not cool kid for getting into them so much later. i actually was looking up tour dates for jet online and came across the aussie invasion tour and the vines obviously were on it, so i gave em a listen and realized ride was what i had been hearing on the local college station and thought was so good. so then i got winning days when it came out and bought highly evolved like the next week.

I used to watch much music also!!! But then they switched to FUSE and now its CRAP. I first heard about the Vines in Rolling Stone then I saw a music video for Get Free. I didn't like them at first (I was more into Eminem then) so I didn't start listening to them till 2003ish I guess. And I bought both albums the beginning of this year after I had already listened to the band for a while.
lugubrious_waifs
I saw the Ipod commercial with "ride" on it and so I went on my merry way to Borders (book store) where they give you a little preview of each song and thought they were pretty cool so I bought the winning days album. My sister stole it for a long time and when I got it back I fell in love with them and now I just cant get enough. I also went online and watched some videos and stuff and I realized what I have been missing all these years. I thought Craig was just amazing and I developed a little girl crush on him and felt really stupid because I hate getting little girl crushes. My sister also stole my highly evolved album and took it to college and I went through a mad frenzy looking for it and trashed my room. I am having withdrawl now but glad its Christmas break soon. Then I can give her what for!

Yeah, well I got a little side tracked. I only regret not discovering them sooner because I missed all the tours, interviews, and magazine articals plus so much more. *sigh*

cobainsappy1969
Back in 2002 i caught a glimpse of the 'get free' video which i thought was pretty cool at the time, and i thought to myself that i ought to get that cd, even though i had never heard any of their other songs. I've been a fan ever since...
liz naumann
in 2002 i read about "the vines" a couple of times in the local street press, saw/heard get free on tv and there was just something about them! smile.gif now highly evolved is one of my fav. albums ever! my friend woody saw them when they were support for you am i in melbourne and were giving out copies of their demo!
TheStreetsEnd
I saw the 'get free' video and the rest is history.
Breaking10
Yeah i saw there music vidio and so I looked up some of there other songs and I liked them so I bought there cd
smASH***
i had a party that went bad and all my music got stolen... tear*
anyway, we had insurance which payed me out with R6000 (South African currency, it's like...er $1000 or 600 pounds) in MUSIC VOUCHERS!
i had a time limit in which to spend the money b4 the vouchers expired...
i went mad.
the majority of what i bought was on the basis of a nice c.d. cover... i know, shameful.
the vines winning days weedled it's way in.
first thang i listened to when i got home... still haven't bothered to look at the other crap i bought cos i was hooked. bought highly evolved the next day.
so ya, this was in june so a bit of a delayed vines fan...no i hate the word fan, in fact, i resent it, just a delayed appreciater of outstanding music ...sigh*
huh.gif
what's crap is that because of being so rediculously delayed i've never seen any of their music videos... except on mtv mash with get free vs. pink...
i had a fit when i saw it... i was kind've contorting on the ground and foaming at the mouth...they were all... so... beautiful.... my family now refers to me as "crack-head" dry.gif
garbage
Best friend of my best friend's sister let me listen to Country Yard. At that time I thought it was a classic song in 1980s style by a 1980s band. I love it. And I started looking for their albums.
Maxwell Demon
I got the I Am Sam soundtrack....cause Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds are on it

so yeah I heard I'm Only Sleeping and liked it alot

then I heard get free on the radio and was like whoa, thats the same band? and bought highly evolved when it came out.
Seniv
I bought their CD Highly Evolved when it first came out because I liked Get Free but I only really started to get into them sometime before Winning Days came out and yea they are both great albums.
Mintox
I saw them supporting You Am I and Eskimo Joe a while back, they were great, I distinctly remember hearing "Factory" that night, it was so infectious! They were giving out Demo's and I got one from Craig, its great!!
Sister Bill
Wow....I can't even remeber ...whooo..hm.

I was flipping through...wait, no. I was listening to the radio and this AWESOME song (aka RIDE) came on and I was like "WHOA, that song kicks ass", and then I happened to be getting into the Vines but I didn't know that was their song, so I just went on their website and clicked Ride and was ecstatic to realize it was the same song. The I streamed Winning Days, and it was one of the best albums I ever heard, because it just flowed. It was true love.

I saw them 20 times in one summer. It tends to grow on you after awhile.
eat grapes
this was when i didnt listen to much music and i went to a countdown Australia's top songs or sumthing like that site and Ride was like number 30. and i liked the song so yeah... kinda went like that.
Bingham
I was talking to a friend of mine in the year above (through MSN) and he sent me Get Free, and then I went and brought Highly Evolved. Pretty simple,

And someone mentioned the IPOD advert, It's the only song people know when i say "The Vines" I just end up saying "The Advert that goes "Ride With Me, Ride With Me, etc"
White_Kids_Love_Hip-Hop
i got into them in 2002 watching mtv2s new rock band show and get free was on there before it was huge. i bought their album and since then influenced 18 other people to buy their albums. yeeah biggrin.gif
Eyes_Between
On MuchMusic (canadian station) a few years ago, there was a "keep music coming" ad that had some guys bobbling along to their radio driving in a car at night. It turns out that they were bouncing around to "Outtathaway".

Can you say, newfound obsession?
-talknerdytome-
I only heard of the Vines this year. I did hear Get Free for the pinball MTV commercial that plays every once in awhile and liked it but i didnt know what it was called. then i was on a trip to vancouver with my brother and his friend and my brothers friend had Animal Machine on his cd. Then when my brother got an mp3 player the same guy helped my bro put some music on it and he put Ride, shes got something to say to me & animal machine(which is the song i fell in love with) and ever scince then ive loved them biggrin.gif

I Just noticed how The Vines changed my taste in music, after i stated listening to them i start listening to bands like them. it used to be eminem, 50 cent, nelly ect. now its the vines, the strokes, muse, the white stripes ect. and im the only one of my friends who listens to those bands while their listening to eminem and nelly and now i cant stand rap. Ill be forever grateful to the vines tongue.gif

Well, I found out about The Vines when in 2002 in a small radtrip with my ex, I heard "Get Free", then like a month later heard "Outtatheway" and bought the album, been hooked ever since biggrin.gif
taylor_blue
you know sometimes how you hear things without listening?
well i had heard the vines when me and my friend listened to music down in her basement. but i wasnt listening to it - like you do when you want to hear a particular song or youre trying to point things out in a song. and then i dont really remember but i went into a cd store in 2002 some time and bought the cd and liked it alot. it tought me a valuable lesson about how people judge bands just by what they hear on the radio. alot more people would probably listen to the vines if they took a look past get free and outtatheway. and also if they looked past songs like ride. im not saying any of those are bad songs, but theyre the more catchy ones people want to hear, not the beautiful deep music that makes you think.
CrazyDaisy
it was a year ago. I was watching Mash on MTV and there was a band called The Vines mixed with Pink's Something-Party-something (I've forgotten the name of the song. it's not important anyways).
it was crazy! the band was rocking and the singer looked a bit kinky (I like kinkyness biggrin.gif smile.gif ).
then I asked a girl on my Forum about the band. she knew quite a lot.
then I started to search about them on net and tv. unfortunately they're not very famous here in Slovenia so it's hard to find out anything about them.

I really like The Vines. :thumbs

I was really bored over the summer break in july 2002, so i decided to watch mtv, I just happened to see their music video for get free, and I thought "wow! This is one of the best breakup songs I've ever heard, none of that sappy shit they always play on mtv..." After the video there was a commercial advertising their album. I looked em up online and fell in love w/ them. The next day, I bought their album and listened to it nonstop. happy.gif
Helter Skelter
i dont remember..it was a while ago....i found them by myself....wow im really working my way down these threads hahahha....ok well happy xmas...or merry xmas....
