Full Version: So-called POSERS
The Vines Message Board > Off Topic > Music
Freaky_freak
Just so you guys know, I'm eclectic, which means I listen to several types of music. Not necessarily all genres, but I like a lot of them.

Please don't kill me for this but I like Avril Lavigne(Yes, the "so-called poser" pop artist) mellow.gif, Josh Groban (Yes, the elegant sort-of opera singer) mellow.gif and I also like RnB(BUT ONLY THE RnB IN THE PHILIPPINES!!!) mellow.gif

I know that rock music is the best. It's artistic and it makes a lot of sense without the need to be understood. Anyway, before you guys could bash on me, can I just ask:

Is it necessary to bash on posers and other genres? sad.gif

Okay, so I guess there are many genres that could get so annoying. I mean, I don't like Hip-hop and rap! I think the lyrics are so...inappropriate and senseless... But I CAN admit that I think 50 cent or Kanye West are good rappers. I don't like their music or their lyrics but I am aware of the fact that they have talent when it comes to that specific genre. Besides, I once saw this thing with 50 cent (It's not a music vid) and he seems like a nice guy. unsure.gif tongue.gif

And of course, there's Avril Lavigne. Pretty much everyone here hates Avril. Okay, I'll say it. She annoys me too. I don't like the way she tries so hard to establish a reputation. But I can forgive her for that. I can't help but give her credit for the music she writes or the fact that she has vowed never to lip sync in a concert because of her loyalty to her career.

So there. I don't know what you guy will think of this post. I just wanna hear your opinions. smile.gif

i dont dress a certain way
because of the type of music i listen to

Thomhatesmusic
I saw a hippy girl on 8th avenue
She barely looked at me for a second or two
and I suddenly realized I no longer looked much like a hippy
mmmmm

She had a long thin dress and rainbow clothes
not long ago I wore one of those
but now-a-days I guess I don't very much
like anything
mmmmm

I had a great pair of bellbottoms
I had two
my friend borrowed one
and the other I outgrew
and now to the eye
I'm turning into another
non-descript guy

But I still travel light
and my hair is still long
and I still hate deoderant
and I still sing songs
but over the years I've noticed
I'm not dressing as colorfully and psychedelic as I used to

Cause I wore my tye-dyes
until they rotted to shreds
and I can no longer follow
The Greatful Dead
and it's gotten to the point where I don't even identify with most Phish fans anymore

And someday soon I know I'll cut my hair
and a week after that I know I won't even care
Is that what it all comes to
all along
everything that you feel
will one day feel wrong

I was talking to my friend Eric
just to see what he thunk
and he said
"Jeff, it's weird
but I no longer look like a punk"
I guess we don't need our clothes
for an identity crutch
and we looked at each other
and we didn't look like much
and we looked out at the world
like a movie theatre
at all the hippies and the punks
and the skinheads and the skaters
and someday or other
maybe sooner or later
they'll come to the realization
that what's important is what you can carry on
in human conversation
and it's not what you wear on the outside
it's what you think and feel on the inside.

I hate that.. when somebody will dismiss any type of music that isnt in their genre, or isnt considered cool enough. I like some Avril songs, though i cant stand her. I like ashlee simpsons 'boyfriend'... I like britney spears, spice girls, some hilary duff songs. I dont like most rap but i like a few Kanye West, Snoop Dogg and 50 cent songs. My friends may laugh but i dont care because at least im open minded about music.

and yeah im usually dressed in jeans, band tees, hoodies and stuff like that so people are usually surprised to hear that i like that type of music haha.

smile.gif Did you make that or is it a song? If so, who sang it? But if YOU wrote it, can I keep it in my journal? Just tell me your name so that it's credited to you. smile.gif

um...I don't get that. hehe laugh.gif Does it mean you also like other genres or you like a different type of rock?? huh.gif smile.gif
kaleidoscope_eyes
Umm...yeah..I'm with Smashed Pumpkin on this. I'm not dedicated to punk rock. As a matter of fact, I don't really like punk rock at all. It's odd that you would classify everyone in a Vines forum as 'punk rock' because, at least in my opinion, The Vines are nowhere near punk. You're not a 'poser' for liking rap music if you're a 'rocker'. Personally, I like everything from rock to classical music to electroclash to pop to rap to whatever the fuck else there is out there. The only music I really hate is country and most metal because, well, they suck.

The worst thing you can do (okay, well, maybe not the WORST thing, but you know what I mean) is label yourself because then you become closed-minded about things. You don't want to listen to a certain band coz it's just not 'punk enough for you'. And I LOATHE people like that. Or people who have given themselves a reputation as a metalhead or something and then they're too ashamed to admit they like a Britney Spears song.

Basically, what I am trying to say, is that all this 'you're a poser', 'she's a teenybopper', 'he's a sell-out' stuff, is a load of bull shit.

Amen.

Okay, pretty much everyone here is a rocker. I noticed that. I don't wanna label you guys but you all seem to be dedicated to punk rock and that's good loyalty! Just so you guys know, I'm eclectic, which means I listen to several types of music. Not necessarily all genres, but I like a lot of them.

i think that its sad, you label people who like these sorts of music posers

i love josh groban, one of my favourite artists, and i dont appreciate you saying that even though you like josh groban, you think people who listen to him are labeled weird

i think its sad that you would call people who like Avril Lavign (even though you like her youself) posers

i think you would be a poser not to like Avril just because a majority of people think she is gay
Freaky_freak
Wow. It's so nice to know that many of you are open-minded. I'm not labeling you guys. It's just that I met some of the members here that are...you know, kinda strict when it comes to the whole punk thing. Sorry if I gave you guys the wrong idea or something. I'm not labeling you guys. And thanks for sharing your opinions. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

I didn't say that the people who listen to her are posers and I definitely don't think that Josh Groban fans are weird. unsure.gif I think my post came out wrong in some ways. Please forgive me. It's just that I've been experiencing so many situations where everyone just goes, "Poser, sell-out, bla bla blah...." The reason why I posted this is because I wanted to know the opinions of people here. Nice to know that you guys are also open-minded. smile.gif Anyway, sorry again if I gave you guys the wrong idea.
Drusilla
i love so many different styles of music, from Avril to Muse to The Clash to Sum41 to HIM to anything! i think its pretty gay to diss someone because of the music they listen to. the only people i would label as posers would be 'musicians' who lip synch and 'musicians' who only got a deal from their acting career and don't actually have any talent
garbage
Should this be in Music section? huh.gif

uhmmm I'm not dedicated to punk either. I don't have a clear concept about genres, but I think what I've really loved are 'nowhere near Punk', though it seems that Indie was bred by old Punk. I believe Indie is the style I love best, but it's obvious that there're lots of various types inside of Indie itself.

I think most of us here like Alternative, and it must be a general genre. There're big differences between 2 Alternative bands like.... the Cure and The Vines (haha). And there're big differences between... Country Yard and Get Free. The way music sounds deeply depends on the artists' various moods while writing and performing it. Even we'll get bored quickly if a good band (we temporarily call them 'good' as they have some good songs) have played similar songs for a long time.

And, it looks like no one's noticed that there's no genre called 'Pop'. 'Pop Music' just refers to all popular music; don't we hope our fav. bands are popular when we hate them being considered 'poppish'? Even a hatable 'poppish' style like Teen Pop is really just a branch of Rock/Dance music. It sounds hardly accepted, but that's the fact.

I don't like Avril at all, but I've listened to most of her records, including the rare ones. Sometimes I feel I hate her much, but sometimes I feel like some of her songs. That's similar to almost our fav. bands. Who loves all of any bands' songs, just mentioning bands that have had quite many records, in total?

All I wanna say may be shortened with an opinion: Music is one of the things that can't be forced, like emotions. Let it be the way it is. Why could you be afraid to be called 'poser' just because you like the type of music which almost people don't? Well, I'm perhaps just telling nonsense mellow.gif

I have Replacements albums, but I also have Abba ones. I like Dinosaur Jr and NWA. I have more Bomfunk MCs singles than My Bloody Valentine ones. So what?

I just realized why I REALLY started this topic. I had a few friends who were EXACTLY like what I described. They listen to "punk rock" and everytime a pop or RnB song plays, they're like, "NOOO!!! EW!!!! MY EARS!!!!" And they keep bashing on this certain pop star despite the fact that artist is a really good singer and songwriter. mellow.gif

Why?

Because it's not original at all... This is pretty much every antifolk song ever done made into one.
Thomhatesmusic
That's talent, too.

I really like the lyrics.
Not as good as "Back when I was 4" but still.
