I feel a little bit silly really....
I bought "Highly Evolved" way back in '02, listened to it, liked it and never thought much about it after that. Only until recently have I listened to it all the way through again and like the topic title states - WOW! It has to be honestly, one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. ever. It starts off with a bang and it just doesn't let up...Highly Evolved, Factory, Outtathaway! and In The Jungle being the standouts imo - I think i'm in love. uhhh anyway, The Vines now sit comfortably in my favorite top3 bands which also contains in no particular order, Radiohead and The Cooper Temple Clause.

Yeah you should listen to Winning Days, it's even better! (in my opinion)
When I first got Highly Evolved, I also listened to it, thought it was pretty good, and then moved on. But then when I heared Winning Days (the song) I realised how brilliant they were. I listened to Highly Evolved over and over and loved it more each time. It's the kind of album that really grows on you. I've been obsessed with them ever since!

Higly Evolved sure kicks f*** ass!!!
I'm not sure if
Winning Days is better...somehow before it was released I expected it to be more on the heavy side
Don't get me wrong, I love it! (Autumn Shade II, WOW!)
I wonder what this new album is going to be like...
*slight feeling of apprehension creeps in
Oh, I'm sure it will be awesome, but (and I've said this before), I wouldn't like The Vines to drift towards this more "poppy" - I hate this word! - sound...

Vinny you're so right. I also listen to the Vines while driving. When I listen to Autumn Shade II or Amnesia I feel like closing my eyes and drifting away to another place. Therefire, its probably not best to do when I'm driving. From now on I will only listen to them in the safety of my own bedroom, where I can trip out safely.

I was slightly underwhelmed with Winning Days to be honest, it didnt seem to pack the same punch Highly Evolved did. Sparks are flying all over the place with HE - WD had alot to live upto I guess. Still all their songs seem to reflect Craigs state of mind and I have been meaning to give it another shot. Everyone does seem to be raving on about "Autumn ShadeII"
Soon.......
And speaking of Criag's states of mind: I have really high hopes for their upcoming album, "poppy" sound or not. Craig went nuts last year (apparantly) and it sounds like he has been inspired again, I cant wait.

all of the songs on both HE and WD were written before HE was even recorded - the vines basically could've put out a double album for their debut if they'd recorded all craig had written - so craig's state of mind was technically the same for both albums. all those songs were written pre-fame. the producer, of course, was the same too (

). some people would say they chose the first-rate songs for HE, and the leftovers for WD, but that wasn't how they went about it. from what i've read, capitol pushed for the first album to have the biggest range of styles and radio-friendly singles, which left WD with mostly heavy or ballady/psychedelic style songs. HE did blow me away with its variety - all that coming from one band! - but personally i think WD has the stronger songs (tv pro, asII, winning days, amnesia). of course, which is the better album is all a matter of opinion in the end.
this third album will be the first to reflect craig's state of mind post-making it big and all the subsequent drama. according to mgmt, the songs are heavier and that probably does reflect where craig has been at mentally in the past year. we're all obvs excited to hear new material.

I remember just before Winning Days came out their was all this hype about it, so when I was in Borders I listened to Highly Evolved on the listening post thingies, but I was only just starting to get into music, so I didn't buy it. Fast forward 6 months and a friend burnt me Winning Days and I loved it so much I bought Highly Evolved the next day. I loved it, but it's really only been my absolute favourite album since yesterday, when I played it and realised that it was about ten times better than my previous favourite album (and now second favourite - Definitely Maybe, by Oasis) .
That was long and rambling. The point was, of course, that it is brilliant.

That's a good motto. I have 2 major rules to live by but that might just be number three:
1.NEVER open your door if Michael Moore is knocking (I can't imagine I'd ever do anything to make him come after me, but just to be on the safe side).
2. NEVER EVER EVER do ANYTHING illegal while in the presence of Peter Doherty (someone's gonna have a camera and the tabloids are gonna find out and you'll be finished before you even began).
3. DO NOT listen to The Vines while driving ( the blissed-out-trance-state they induce could have deadly consequences. It would be awful to mow down a couple of innocent pedestrians as Winning Days is crescending, yes?).

I guess we'll never know but it makes you think. Hmm... I don't think they'd have had that huge bubble of hype if they'd gone with WD first. I think they'd have had a slower rise to fame, but then again a big thing with The Vines popularity is their live performances. They copped a lot of flack over that aspect, and maybe that still would have influenced people against them? Then again maybe if they'd had a slower rise they wouldn't have been pushed as hard to tour and maybe they wouldn't have had as much tension within the band as a result? I've never thought about what would have happened if they'd changed the order they released the albums before. I think I'm going to be thinking about that for a while now, in between thinking about what will happen with their 3rd album. I'm really hoping that it goes well for the guys.

WD had as much variety as HE - think about the four lead-off songs (ride, animal machine, tv pro, asII) which are nothing alike. WD just didn't have as radio-friendly singles as HE. the hype machine was in full effect - nme was featuring them every week well before HE was released - and everyone was going on about the new garage rock revolution, and lumping them in with it, so i'm inclined to think WD would have blown up just as big. it's one of those deals where the time was just right for the band.
keep in mind too, most of the other bands singled out in the garage rock revolution of 2002 - the strokes, white stripes, hives - didn't do near as well with their follow-ups either. most had the same percentage drop-off in sales, the difference is they remained critical darlings while the vines took a hit from the critics. more pressure seems to be riding on the vines as a result, cos it's like they've got to prove to fans and critics they're still worth giving a listen to.
Brooklyn Girl
Sep 26 2005, 05:34 PM
I still think HE was more diverse than WD. I get what you're saying about the garage rock revolution but it seems like the critics have been harder on the Vines than with any of the other bands. Perhaps it was because they weren't aware of Craig's condition and they assumed he was just a rock star brat? It will be interesting to see how the press will approach him this time around.

It was their first concert in Sydney at the end of last year sometime. It's funny how you've got the lyrics from 2+2=5 stuck in your head cos thats the first track they played -I'm sure I dont have to illustrate how awesome it was (I would have to invent a new way to speak really)....
