i pity the peeps who haven't discovered the wonder that is 'degrassi: next.' if you haven't watched 'degrassi,' then you've missed out on penis pumps, students getting it on with teachers, school shootings, boy on boy action, oral stds, hot bi-polar musician boys, goths who cut, and lots of kids saying the word 'a-boot.'
the show originates out of canada, but airs on 'the N' in the states. god only knows how fee gets it.
to get started, let's introduce some of the main characters, starting with the eye candy first...

Craig Manning
Clever, funny, smarty-arty Craig used to be known as the guy with the abusive father who died, then the guy that cheated on multiple girls at once (he botched his relationship with his soulmate Ashley by cheating on her with Manny, then lied about it to both, then made up with Ash and now they're together "forever"), then they guy who found his best friend Jimmy shot in school. Now he's the guy who's bipolar but is trying hard to deal with it. Craig plays guitar. That's his thing.

Ashley Kerwin
The Ashley saga is a long one: the ultra-popular prep who alienated all her friends and became an ultra-unpopular Goth who made up with her friends to become a kind-of-popular rocker. Not to mention the on-again/off-again boyfriends along the way (first Jimmy, then Craig, who cheated on her hard and was majorly off until he apologized to become just plain off, then was on again, then briefly off, and is now on like forever and ever; plus, after Craig found out he was bipolar, she became nurse extraordinaire). Ash is friends with Paige and Ellie.

Manny Santos
When cute little Manny decided to become hot hot hot Manny, her life kind of fell apart for a while. First, she decided she was every little bit of that and toyed with all the guys. Then she seduced Craig when she knew he was dating Ashley. He cheated on Manny right back, and she ended up with a broken heart, an unwanted baby and abortion (not aired in the States

Marco Del Rossi
Marco's the super-nice-guy-that-everybody-likes, with the fashionable fashions and the soul patch dealie. After a long personal struggle, he came out to most of his friends a while back, and he's seriously dating Paige's older brother, Dylan. But Marco's terrified of his father finding out he's gay, so the secret's still limited to his mom and a small circle of friends (including, of course, his bandmates Spinner, Jimmy, Craig, and Ashley).

Emma Nelson
Emma's always been an activist, but her activism turned into just self-righteous do-gooding. After her long relationship with Sean went bad, she kind of got revenge crazy. Later she started a crusade against Rick, which turned into pity for him, which he mistook for love. When Rick came to school with a gun seeking his own revenge, he very nearly shot Emma. Sean grabbed the gun, and likely saved her life. Emma's still trying to come to grips with the whole thing - like by blowing STD-ridden boys! - and the way she deals becomes more of an issue every day.

Ellie Nash
Ellie's always seemed like a massively self-assured punk who even helped both Ashley and Marco find themselves. Truth is she has a seriously tough home life, and she used to cut herself when the stress got too bad. But she's getting help for that, and understanding herself helped her to bond with Sean. They became a serious couple. "Serious" as in she moved in with him and used the word "love." When Sean left Degrassi to return to his parents, Ellie was heartbroken, and still living alone.

Spinner Mason
Spinner went through the bully phase, the angry-tough-guy phase, and the "I wuv you honeybee" phase with Paige. Then she wrecked his car, and he went through the "do whatever I say" phase, until Paige went through the dumping-Spinner phase, and Spinner went back into the bully phase. Pretty soon, he hit the alienating-his-best-friend-Jimmy phase. When he teamed up with Jay to humiliate Rick and then pin the blame on Jimmy, he never expected Jimmy to end up in the hospital with a bullet in his back. Now Spinner's entered the confused, sad, and scared phase.

Jay Hogart
The guy at Degrassi everybody's scared of, and he likes it that way. Jay hates and steals and steals and hates, pretty much. He sees some of himself in Sean, so they run together. Jay planned out the public embarrassment of Rick, and then convinced Rick that Jimmy did it. Rick shot Jimmy. Now Jay's more worried about getting caught than he is about Jimmy not being able to walk. He's also packing some mean STDs.

Paige Michalchuk
Paige used to be the kind of fashionista mean girl who would manipulate her friends and brutalize her enemies. A lot of things happened to change that. She was sexually assaulted. Her friend was put into the hospital by an abusive boyfriend. And through it all, her friends and ex-friends stood by her side. Now, Paige can still vivisect you with three words if she wants, but she's less likely to do it (unless you're the jerkhole who raped her, or Spinner, who thought that being her boyfriend meant treating her like barf). She's just as stylish and just as popular, but she doesn't care as much if anyone notices. And if she finds you in trouble, she's more likely to help you out than to take advantage of you. She's still Paige, but better. Spent this season getting it on with her teacher.

Jimmy Brooks
One of the consistently popular guys at school, the type who, once he decided you were a good person, would be a real, true friend. He even eventually got along with Rick, once Jimmy realized that Rick was trying to be a good person. Jimmy had been dating Hazel, playing in Craig's band, and looking for a basketball future. Then his life instantly changed. Rick, believing that Jimmy had betrayed him and humiliated him, came to school with a gun and shot him in the back. Jimmy survived, but he's confined to a wheelchair and striving to cope.
