Wirft oder schießt man auf der Erde einen Gegenstand nach oben, so erreicht er eine bestimmte Höhe und fällt dann wieder auf die Erde zurück. Je höher die Anfangsgeschwindigkeit des Objekts ist, desto größer ist die erzielte Höhe. Dies gilt, solange die Anfangsgeschwindigkeit kleiner als die Fluchtgeschwindigkeit der Erde ist.
