No, it isn't about Kings of Leon or Queens of the Stone Age
It is about
Ladies in Rock My question is, why have there been so few of them, and fewer still that are of any good?
Lisa Gerard, Dolores O'Riordan, Sinead O'Connor, Alanis Morisette, Karen O. ... that's it?!
So, who's your favourite Lady Rocker, if you have one, that is??

good topic----it is really sad that women have not really broken out in mass appeal in rock---although, i believe there are great role models out there...
back in the day ladies like wendy o'williams and joan jett (to name a few) were unequivocally their own.....nowadays, i feel a female musician has to pimp out her sexuality more than the typical male musician.....which sucks.
when courtney love first came out with hole (and i am speaking about the first 2 albumns)----i was like, finally someone who is female and can be "rock" at the same time.....and be just as contoversial as a man, in a love/hate way....make sense? now, i just believe those albumns probably would never have been so good without the back up of her band and, of course, dave grohl helping out in the production......
but there are several women in rock who are true to, not only their femininity, but also to their musicianship.....fiona apple comes to mind as a true artist who has never compromised her sexuality for the sake of selling albumns.....
it is that double standard which holds true.....and of course, the public which eat it up like yesterday's birthday cake.....but i do believe there is a change going on----i mean, isn't everyone sick of the beyonce's, christina's and britney's of the world? i think so......
i hope this makes some sense....

Do alternative ladies count? 'Cause I really like Joanna Newsom. I'm also very fond of Kimya Dawson.
But of course Delays' Greg Gilbert is the greatest woman in rock.

It's such a shame that one of the most brilliant female voices has been sort of wasted...
if only CHER was into rock rather that all that pop stuff!
a digression: have you noticed that it is IRISH women who have the most awesome voices? Sinead, Dolores, Enya, Mary Brennan...
curious...

I just realised I forgot Melissa Auf Der Maur.

She's fantastic!
And there's really nothing wrong with Cher's songs, she's absolutely brilliant. In fact, I spent most of my time in the school band singing 'Gypsies, Tramps And Thiefs'.

i agree with you on that respect....she is good at what she does....
but, really, let's be honest---do you really think, in the beginning, that No Doubt would have gotten any airplay on Mtv if she had been, say, overweight and not that great to look at? my guess would be--no....she would never have gotten as far as she has (solo albumn, clothing line, acting) if she wasn't so pretty.....just my opinion....
i give her mad props on her charisma, though....she has buttloads of it!
just my opinion

i think mtv loves her because she can sell herself without taking her clothes off.
no doubt is mroe commercial now, but i actually meant gwen stefani at the beginning of their carreer, with that hip music. i just love it
what do you think about janis joplin? i mean, she HAS to be a queen for her beautiful voice. she was ugly like shit but she could sing like a goddess
SpotlessMind
Aug 1 2005, 10:08 PM
^^^true....i do agree with you on janis joplin....but that was back at a time when the music industry didn't have videos, marketing and such playing as big a role as they do today.....there were many different record companies, too, at that time....so basing things more on TALENT (such as joplin) was feasible....
nowadays, you pretty much have three major record labels who have merged with the smaller more respectable ones....do you think that if someone like her would be given the chance today? i don't know....hopefully, talent wins out in the end...but not always....the critisizm(sp?) that she would receive for her looks alone would be harsh. i mean, look at how journalists protray craig nicholls----and he is a pretty white boy....
i give kudos to gwen stefani---no disrespect at all.....i am sure she paid her dues and yada, yada, yada.....but i DO believe the fact that she is "cute" to the eyes of the industry helped their band majorly...and when record companies see that, all they see are dollar signs---not talent....
sad, but true.
if it were a perfect world, only the most talented would make it---but it doesn't work that way. Sometimes it does....and that is what keeps people listening.
