For a short time, At The Drive-In were the "it" band, but shortly after they wen't on hiatus. That was 4 or so years ago, and it looks like they won't get back together.

At The Drive-In, in my opinion, are the greatest punk group ever, but there not just punk. There later releases sort of leaned towards what Cedric and Omar are doing in The Mars Volta, making their songs art-punk.

Ok, everyone knows this but still, when the band wen't on hiatus, Cedric and Omar formed The Mars Volta, a prog-rock band. Everyone else, formed Sparta, an emo, punk band. Each band is a different direction from from what they did in At The Drive-In. The Mars Volta wen't in the prog-rock direction At The Drive-In were headed, but people say there two complex! Sparta wen't in the opposite direction, going into the emo-punk format At The Drive-In use to be, but people say there to simple! I beleive, At The Drive-In are the happy medium.
White_Kids_Love_Hip-Hop

First of all, At the Drive-in is NOT emo. NOT emo. WTF?
Secondly, I'm happy that you got the hyphen in the name, dark requiem.
elfinator
At the Drive-in are pretty good, I have Relationship yadda yadda.

I much prefer the 'too complicated' Mars Volta though. Proggression, woo!

Winningdays what ever your numer is, I can't keep you all straight:

YOU'RE a sucky emo band, take THAT.

I'm on a roll today.
Dark_Requiem
While it's sad to say, they are considered emo even though there art-punk. sad.gif

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Formed: 1994 in El Paso, TX
Disbanded: 2001
Genre: Rock
Styles: Indie Rock, Emo, Post-Hardcore

Elfinator: I like them too, probably more then Sparta, but I like At The Drive-In better then both I think.

Not critics, that's average ratings of people who go on the website and rate them.

their name sounds familiar....thats about it.

I listened through the album last week but I didn't like it.
comradestripe
At The Drive-In are absolutely amazing; Relationship of Command is one of the most thrilling albums of the last decade, and their other work is excellent too. They are in no way emo.

The Mars Volta are mostly wanky nonsense, and Sparta didn't grab me at all. ATD-I all the way.
Dark_Requiem
I saw one of there concerts, They were amazing live. The only time Cedric wasn't running around was when he was playing guitar, or singing "Invalid Letter Dept." (it wouldn't be appropriate if he did, would it?). At The Drive-In were anti-slam dancing, and I beleive so are both bands that rose from there ashes. I really hope that they'll settle there disputes and reform.

I saw them in November 2002 and was pretty bored by them. I think ATD-I would've been amazing live, but TMV's show was far too much "look at how well Omar Rodriguez plays the guitar".
Dark_Requiem
Well the ATDI concert I saw Omar was running around, and Cedric was way more, he would like throw his microhpone and catch it and stuff, and at one point did the fonz dance. It was pretty amazing. My cousin and her friend saw MV play and she didn't say about how they played, just about how they were against moshpits.

You can't deny it though Comadestripe, Omar is pretty damn talented.
comradestripe
Of course I don't deny that Omar is a brilliant guitarist and musician, but I don't go to gigs just to watch someone flaunt his guitar skills. TMV gig had nothing of the excitement I'd heard of at ATD-I gigs and was thus disappointing.
Dark_Requiem
Didn't someone say he was putting out a solo album?

At The Drive-In did a cover of the Pink Floyd song "Take Thy Stethoscope and walk", It's worth checking out if your an At The Drive-In or Pink Floyd fan.
comradestripe
He is, yes.
Dark_Requiem
Do you know when it comes out?
ultrasex
At The Drive-In reminds me of Rage Against The Machine. Or atleast "One Armed Scissor" song does. I dunno.

The Mars Volta...eh...
Nads
i like at the drive in more than the mars volta!
Humperdinck
Arn't they the devil's music?
lalalalano
Indeed.
annie
I prefer Mars Volta to ATD-I. After the footage I saw at BDO and hearing them live, god nothing can compare.
Dark_Requiem
You're crazy Annie.
LostTown
Um, yeah, I made a topic about it before, but no one replied to it.

Yeah At The Drive-In was a great band, but the Mars Volta is definitely much better, both technically and creatively. And I dont think its true what someone said about Omar being the center of attention. I think that he definitely has his ego on stage and everything, but i mean watching them, the other musicians wont slip you by either. I mean look at Jon Theodore. When The Mars Volta play live, I bet you fifty percent of the audience doesnt keep their eyes off of him the whole time. He's just an amazing drummer. Anyway, this wasn't the The Mars volta thread so i'll stfu and gtfo.
