I am doing a study on the nature of evil. On my way I crossed this tune by the Vines: Evil Town. In the lyrics is mentioned "Shonen" - does anyone know what that "name"? is refering to? Is the evil refering to a specific town or is it just a product of artistic-imagination?

Shonan means "young boy" in Japanese. He says 'Shonan knife'. Shonan isn't the town - it's a knife.... unless he's talking about the band:

Also about Evil Town, I remember reading somewhere that Craig said the song was originally about an actual person - but it turned into a song about a place as he wrote it.

^ I was thinking that as well since in the lyrics he uses capital letters:
Shonen Knife and Kills. He's also referred to bands in songs before (eg. Autumn Shade II - "You Am I and I am great").

I can imagine that if someone introduces himself with 'The name is Lusty. Pete Lusty' everyone would laugh their arse off. I know I would.

I'm pretty sure the "Shonen Knife" line is a reference to the band. I remember reading somewhere that he included the name in the song because Kurt Cobain was a big fan of them.

I'll link you (if you want) to an interview where he says the town in which he is referring to. Supposedly, it's sutton, above...sringville (I coulnd't quite make out what he says, it's an audio interview).

^ I thought he was just being sarcastic in that interview (assuming we're talking about the same interview that is - I don't remember where it's from but I have it on my computer somewhere).

Uh. Well, he's a compulsive liar, so it could be any number of things.

that's my all-time favorite craig vid - it's an mtv germany interview from 2002. craig paints!! i told my good friend venus the bits i liked the most with him painting, and voila! - she made this spectacular combo for another forum i haunt and now here.

but syonan means light from the south
