Full Version: Greatest Britpop Band Ever?

"especially the 90s' Brit Indie Rock/Pop", I say it because I think this decade is the period when 'Britpop' became a clearly specific concept (not just simply meaning 'BRITish POPular music' smile.gif) and was being promoted to the highest point, right? I even think it somewhat dominated the European showbiz at that time. Whatever, I put some pre-90 bands on the list and if you wanna choose the older bands, thats okay.
I love all of them (I do like Britpop). But you know, I love Pulp best (exactly right now), I still wanna vote for Blur and Oasis though. (I know they'll be voted much more than Pulp so I... biggrin.gif)

THE KINKS.

the Kinks are pretty good! I love them, too.

I voted for Blur. And I love Blur also. smile.gif
Vee-Vee
Im not fan of any of those bands but I voted Oasis...
Feedums
How the fook am I going to choose between Blur and Oasis?!

...oh, I know.

By voting for Radiohead.
richardxcore
I love blur.
I love pulp.
I love the kinks.
I love the who.
I DO NOT love oasis.

Radiohead gets my vote.
Jammeh
Britpop was in the mid 90s, so Kinks et al shouldn't be in there. I don't think Radiohead were Britpop either, they weren't jaunty enough. Same for The Verve.

Oasis, I suppose.

There's no "The" in Madness...

Okay, nitpicking over...
richardxcore
What defines, "Pop"?
richardxcore
pop3 Audio pronunciation of "pop" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pp) Informal

n.

1. Popular music.

That's kinda broad, isn't it?
In that case, any brit band could be pop as long as they're popular.
AutumnShade
Why am I the only one who said Madness?!? ohmy.gif:

Yeah, but the actual term 'Britpop' was used to describe all the upbeat Brit bands in the mid 90s. It was Blur or Pulp who were first called Britpop. I can't remember which.

I think it was Blur. I should know with all the Britpop stuff I read... unsure.gif

From "The Last Party" by John Harris:
"The idea of Britpop comprised of two strands. Firstly, as exemplified by Blur, it referred to the idea that young British musicians were knowingly reconnecting their music to a fleetingly forgotten heritage, stretching from the rock aristocracy of the 60s - The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who - to the more cerebral elements of punk rock and beyond.

Equally importantly, Britpop was built around commercial success: top 40 hits and becoming acquainted with Saturday morning television and Radio One Roadshows. Britpop was an outgrowth of indie music: the stuff that, in the slipstream of punk, had sought to express its ongoing hostility to the mainstream by setting up what amounted to an alternative musical universe."

I haven't finished the book yet, but it's been an interesting read if anyone's interested in Britpop. I've been listening to the soundtrack of "Live Forever" the last week or so. I'm falling increasing in love with Catatonia again. Cerys is fabulous! cool.gif

Love, an avid Britpop fan.
kaleidoscope_eyes
Radiohead..Although, I don't really consider them Brit-pop.
comradestripe
We've been through this before - the term Britpop lived in the mid-90s and should be left there. I see your logic, but it's just not the case; The Who aren't Britpop, and Radiohead aren't Britpop...the bands on your list which could really be said to be so are:

Blur
The Boo Radleys
(Echobelly, maybe)
Elastica
(Lush, maybe)
Menswear
Oasis
Pulp
Supergrass

All British pop isn't 'Britpop'; it was a specific term used for a specific term. Using your logic, you should include The Spice Girls, Take That, Girls Aloud, Boyzone and people like that in your poll, and you haven't and wouldn't.
Highly_Revolting
Menswear...haaahahaa.

Thanks for that, I needed a good laugh.

Oasis.

My stepsister asked me the other day "Blur or Oasis?" Me and my dad absolutely pissed ourselves and she didn't know why we were laughing, my dad was like "Elizabeth that's a very original question you have there" and she was like "yeah but why isn't she answering?" (as I was literally falling off the seat in the car) and I finally started to breath again and said "Elizabeth he's being sarcastic! You're like 11 years late with that question."

She went into such a fucking huff, she thinks she's "cool" because she imitates the music I like and she was all offended that we'd corrected her on the subject. rolleyes.gif

I thought my dad was gonna crash the car he was laughing so much. mellow.gif

Were you really laughing that much? Imagine what you'd do if someone said something funny!

Yes I was laughing that much. It's hard for you to understand why me and my dad were laughing as, obviously, you don't know what she's like.

uhm I love Oasis but not as much as Blur, Pulp, the Kinks, Radiohead and even Super Furry Animals. But I think Radiohead cannot be the Greatest Britpop band though theyre great because the type they play is... I dont know how to explain. Ok, its up to you.

I know some Britpop bands are called britpop just cos theyre from UK. Yes, I agree with all the things you said above but I hope you read the first post I posted. I know true Britpop was born by Blur so the bands played before them cannot follow that style, Britpop. But what about the bands play psychedelic - pseudo? Such as Stone Roses? I really think their music have some similarities with the bands play true Britpop. And Radiohead... you said the similar thing in the topic Radiohead. I admit Im loser. I just realised that the things you said there are true. But I see many Britpop chart including Radiohead. I was afraid if I didnt put them on the poll, some ppl wouldnt agree. So I...

Ps: I dont agree with you that only

I voted for Radiohead. They're probably not the greatest Brtipop band ever, but I absolutely love them and I don't really know much of any of the other bands on there...

It's a shame no one has voted for The Verve. They are so underrated.
Thomhatesmusic
I wouldnt want to file them under britpop.
Jesus, there's even The Who in this thing! And The Stone Roses, come on!
Colin_is_a_Phillover
laugh.gif Yeah, I get what you mean. But they are partly Britpop. It's not their great Shoegazig character, but it still exists.

How can Radiohead win a poll in which they're really not an appropriate answer? I cite the above list as which bands actually comprised Britpop.
Colin_is_a_Phillover
Blur aren't really Britpop either... unsure.gif
