I've been playing the clarinet in school band for 4 years.

I have been playing the piano for about 9 years.

And I have been playing guitar for less than 1 year, but am getting quite good rather fast, because I play the shit out of it.

And I sing. Which most definitely counts as an instrument to me.

im trying to learn guitar. i used to play cello at school for four years, but i quit b/c i was last chair at every concert, and then i tried to learn violin but that only lasted a few months. i think i have instrument a.d.d. but im going to try to stick with the guitar. why does it have to be so hard to play though?

I have never learned anything! I now wish I did tho.. we had a violin which i was meant to learn but it got stolen so i never got the opportunity.

I recently got sent over from Mebourne our old acoustic guitar which i had forgotten about, my mission is to learn how to play it despite haveing zero experience in music.

What do you guys reccomend... Should i get a book and try to self teach, or just get lessons from a tutor? Should I not bother learning it all all because it's too late? Do you have any guidance about getting started? I've been procrastinating about starting to learn it beacause i have no idea how to approach it.

Music is a valuable skill you can learn at any age. I say get a book first and if you're not getting what you want out of it go for private lessons. Private lessons are good for kids because they can't follow a book too easy. When you're an adult though they can basically tell you the same things as a well written book. I'd still reccomend a couple lessons after you play for a while just to get some pointers and suggestions, but taking them weekly or whatever will tend to be expensive.

Don't be afraid of anything. of course you're going to "suck" at first especially since you're starting out with an acoustic. They're much harder to play. just let the calouses develop and try not to get feeling too down when you're not getting things right. you'll be surprised each time you pick the guitar back up at how much you approve.

Don't start with hard stuff it'll frustrate you too much right off. learn chords, and scales major minor and pentatonic, then start with easier tabs and music.

oh and its also good to pick up a metronome and there are videos you can get to help with picking up rhythms

I'll get a book first and then force a friend to teach me what I don't get.

I wouldn't know if you spelled stuff wrong anyway, That is one of my weak points along with grammar. You sound very well-informed and sincere. (just commenting on ya last comment).

Ive been learning to play classic guitar for half a year now. I like it. Kind of.

I played the piano when I was like 6 (who hasnt) and then the cello for a while but my teacher sucked and then I found the harp. It sounds kinda lame but its not what you think, I play the celtic harp which is very different. Most people think of like old snobby ladies in white gowns and angels on their big ass harps. Mine is soo much better, I play cool stuff on mine. They also have electric harps . Maybe I will try to play one some time. Electric and harp just seem like something that doesnt go together...I could be cool.
