You can't just ask what "a good metal band" is without having to clarify yourself first as to what exactly you're looking for. I really doubt there are many people out there who are fond of ALL the sub genres of metal. So I didn't want to be recommending bands that he knew he was going to dislike.

Otep is the lady's actual name, isn't it? She's cool. I saw her on the Uranium special "Chicks in Metal". It was a really awesome episode.

ive heard whisperings of Tool and Nine Inch Nails being some sort of metal. then again i dont really know or care. i love them both.

Nine Inch Nails are industrial but they have guitarist and stuff so people label them as Industrial metal or Industrimetal. still a great band.

Speaking of wich, I have taken a liking to industrial metal. List me up people.

did anyone read the book "lords of chaos"? its a story about the beginning of black metal in norway. really hard to read. ...they burn churches down, killing each other etc. Varg Vikernes from Burzum is a great songwriter but really crazy. He now sits in jail after killing a bandmember of Mayhem.

Arch Enemy - (Swedish) Already mentioned but Angela Gossow the growler is hot! Music wise very skillful but not so harmonic. Dowload songs from the "Wages of Sin" album, the new one (Doomsday Machine) isn't that great.

Children of Bodom - (Finnish) The lead singer is the lead guitarist and rated as Finlands greatest guitarist. Their old stuff is very good. Their new album is decent but a bit too many blanks due to the rythm-concentrated guitar playing.

In Flames - Another Swedish band. They are the Swedish Children of Bodom except its not only growling, the vocalist of In Flames sings too which I find a good thing.

Cradle of Filth - If your more for the Gore/Black Metal this is a good choice. Dani Filth, the vocalist, is really amazing with the sounds he makes with his voice. If its your first time listening to this band, their music will sound weird.

System of a Down have some good catchy stuff but guitar skill uhuh, nothing there.
Slipknot, as the stereotype parent says "they're just noise!" well they are right - no sequence whatsoever, althought joey the drummer, is rated as the best in the world, i agree with the speed part, but technique = 0.
Metallica, the influence of almost all of todays metal bands (they say it themselves), all musicians rocking althought im out of the metallica phase now.

Everyone should know that Black Sabbath was the greatest influence of every metal band. Metallica...umm the first album was great, really but the rest? mmm, imho not really...

Yes yes I know that (althought you could say Black Sabbath's influence came from the Beatles which came from Jazz which came from...) but thats not the way I meant it!
I meant if you ask any metal band today (iv seen it on their bio's) they will say their influences are Metallica, Iron Maiden, The Scorpions etc.

Anyways, I dont really know what im doing on a Vines forum... I used to love them but they have faded quite a lot from my music taste... Althought i dont post trash or spam or wtv so i guess thats good.
